Job summary

Penn United Technologies, Inc. is seeking an Apprentice – Machine Operator for the Preform department at our Carbide facility. This full‑time role emphasizes precision work, learning a high‑demand skill, and growth within an employee‑owned company. Daylight shifts are primary, with afternoon or midnight coverage as needed.

You will read prints, set up and operate manual and CNC machines, and measure with calipers and micrometers while attending on‑site apprenticeship classes.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must have math and mechanical aptitude for precision work.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Must be available for daylight shifts, with afternoon/midnight coverage as needed; 8–10 hour days; lift up to 50 lbs.

Responsibilities

  • Read prints and job orders to determine specs and tolerances.
  • Set up and select fixtures, tools, and materials on machines.
  • Operate manual and CNC lathes, mills, jig bores, and grinders to meet specifications.
  • Set controls and input commands for machine operation.
  • Verify finished work with precision measuring devices (calipers, micrometers, gauges).
  • Attend on-site apprenticeship classes while performing shop floor duties.

Penn United Technologies, Inc. is looking for a full‑time Apprentice – Machine Operator to work in our Preform department at our Carbide facility. We are seeking individuals who desire precision work, want to learn a high‑demand skill, and wish to grow professionally in an employee‑owned company. This position is primarily daylight but the candidate must be available for afternoon and/or midnight shifts as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Prioritize, plan and prepare work. Analyze tasks and establish appropriate sequence of operations
  • Read prints and job orders for product specifications to determine dimensions and tolerances and machine set‑up requirements
  • Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, and materials on machines
  • Set‑up and safely operate various machining equipment such as manual and CNC lathes, mills, jig bores, and grinders in order to machine or grind components to customer specifications
  • Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors or enter commands to retrieve, input or edit computerized machine control media
  • Verify conformance of finished workpiece to specifications using precision measuring devices (such as micrometers, calipers, gauges, etc.)
  • Attend on‑site apprenticeship classes in addition to on‑the‑job learning while performing responsibilities on the shop floor
Qualifications
  • Must have math & mechanical skills/aptitude
  • Must have the ability & desire to do precision work
  • Able to work well independently and cooperatively with a team
  • Candidates must be available to work primarily daylight, but also have availability for afternoon and/or midnight shifts as needed, stand 8‑10 hours per day, and lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
Education and Experience
  • Candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • No experience necessary, however, previous experience with lathes, mills, grinders, blueprint reading and measurement tools such as calipers & micrometers is a plus
