Job summary

The City of Brenham is seeking a laborer to perform unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor and assist in maintenance and construction of electric distribution lines. Responsibilities include operating basic equipment, installing poles, and grounds maintenance.

Candidates must meet safety requirements, communicate with customers, and endure outdoor conditions. CDL and related certifications may be required; on-call and overtime are part of the job.

Job description

Summary

Performs miscellaneous unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor duties and operates non-complex equipment in maintenance and construction of electric distribution lines.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs work in a safe and efficient manner;
  • Ensures safety of self, other crew members, and the public as part of planning and performing work;
  • Participates in job site briefing for crew including discussion of job plan, personal protective equipment (PPE) and risk mitigation;
  • Must be able to courteously communicate with customers, the public, and City staff;
  • Cleans and stocks utility trucks with materials, poles, and transformers;
  • Sends materials up pole and pulls up wire using hand line;
  • Lifts heavy objects;
  • Assists lineworkers as directed;
  • Installs barricades and safety cones before job and removes after work is completed;
  • Operates equipment such as truck, mower, and various hand and power tools such as chain saw, weed eater, brush axe, power saw and the like;
  • Loads, unloads, assists in installation and removal of poles;
  • Mows grass, chips limbs and performs other grounds maintenance;
  • Temporarily assist in construction, maintenance repair and rehabilitation activities in other departments, including Streets, Water/Wastewater, Parks, Meter Reading, and Airport;
  • Under direction from Superintendent or Crew Leader may perform daily pre-checks of vehicles and equipment prior to leaving the yard and documents results and maintain vehicles and equipment in proper working condition, including; checking oil, water, fuel, tires, and hydraulic system, and making appropriate adjustments;
  • Must be available to stand "On Call" during evenings, holidays, and weekends as part of rotational schedule with other lineworkers. Also, must be available to respond to overtime for emergencies.
  • Must be able to work outside in all types of weather conditions, including storms, to respond to emergencies and outages.; and
  • Performs other duties as

This is a non-supervisory position.

Education and/or Experience

High school graduation or its equivalent; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Knowledge Of

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public; communicate effectively; operate equipment and tools used in maintaining and repairing electrical systems; and read and understand manuals, policies, and other documents.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

For level EAL – Employees who do not have a Class A CDL (Commercial) Texas driver's license must successfully obtain this license within 180 days of hire. The City of Brenham offers an in-house training program to obtain this license.

For level EAL1 – Valid Class A Texas commercial driver's license (CDL) is required.

The employee is required to perform job duties from various heights, lift and/or move objects weighing up to 100 pounds, such as materials and equipment, and must carry, push, and pull materials. The employee must be able to see clearly, with or without vision correction, in close situations, at a distance, and peripherally, and be able to adjust focus. The employee must be able to climb poles and follow safety procedures.

The work environment requires that the employee exercise caution at all times and adhere to safety standards to avoid the risk of personal injury. The employee is exposed to outdoor elements, loud noises, vibrations, and respiratory hazards such as dust, gases, and chemicals. The employee may be required to work in a high voltage environment. The work environment is noisy and distracting.

Residency Requirement (HR Policy Manual)

Employees who are likely to be called to work in cases of emergency may be required to reside within reasonable response commuting ranges of their places of work. A reasonable response time to an emergency is forty-five (45) minutes.

Residency which allows response time to a City emergency of forty-five (45) minutes MUST be established within 90 days of hire.
