Job summary

Ameren Missouri is seeking an Apprentice Lineman in training to join our line crews. You will gain hands-on experience from unenergized to energized circuits, progressing toward Journeyman Lineman over a three-year program.

Under supervision, you will learn to assemble materials, climb poles, and work on services and higher voltages as you demonstrate skill and safety. Commitment to safety and reliable attendance is essential.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Successfully pass EEI C.A.S.T. Test or its future equivalent.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Class A CDL.
  • Punctual, reliable attendance, and possess a positive attitude.

Responsibilities

  • Assist line crew and perform tasks during apprentice period.
  • Make up or assemble line materials, hardware, and pole fixtures; climb poles and assist Lineman.
  • Work on services, secondaries, and unenergized conductors as training progresses.
  • Operate under supervision, then independently as proficiency develops on voltages up to 480V.
  • Adhere to safety rules, communicate effectively, and maintain equipment and materials.

Our service area covers 64 counties and more than 500 communities including the greater St. Louis area

DUTIES:

Under immediate supervision; working in a line construction or maintenance crew in the capacity of a lineman in training for advancement to Journeyman Lineman, to receive instructions and perform work involving such practice in preparation for such skilled duty, over a three-year period; to advance in such work in accordance with Apprentice Lineman Agreement and apprentice curriculum, initially on unenergized circuits, and later on energized circuits ranging progressively from lower to maximum voltage; to perform such work under the immediate supervision of a Lineman initially, and then independently after ability to perform each phase of the work skillfully and safely has been demonstrated; and to do similar and less skilled work as assigned. In this connection to perform details of work, such as:

During the initial period, make up or assemble line materials, hardware or pole fixtures; climb poles and assist Lineman as directed on services, secondaries, and unenergized conductors or higher voltage rating; perform any ground work normally performed by a Lineman.

Later, continue the work of the first period, and in addition, to work alone on energized conductors ranging to 480 volts; also perform less complicated work on higher voltages under the immediate supervision of a Lineman.

Finally, perform all the full range of duties of a skilled Lineman as a rounding out and proficiency attainment period, continuing under the immediate supervision of and accompanied by a fully skilled Lineman while working on voltages above 480 volts. May work alone on conductors of all voltages involving work of a less complex nature; under the direct but not constant supervision of a foreman, perform work on more difficult work in order to prepare for examination.

At the end of the Apprentice Program, an Apprentice Lineman must successfully complete an examination, either oral, written, or practical demonstration, or selected features of all these.

SPECIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for adherence to safety rules and the use of appropriate protective equipment to ensure their own safety, fellow crew members, and the public; for exercising care when working with Company or customer-owned equipment.

Availability for and timely response to call-outs on a regular basis and predictable and reliable attendance are conditions for satisfactory job performance.

Use initiative and judgment within established policy and procedural guidelines.

For prudent use and care for vehicles, tools, equipment, and materials.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other employees and the general public.

Communicate effectively in writing, orally, electronically and with others to assimilate, understand, and convey information, in a manner consistent with job functions.

CONTACTS:

With the public when requesting outages on service wires in order that certain work may be done, such as transferring from old to new poles or reversing outlets.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposed to outside weather exposure conditions; infrequently, called upon to work at night, under inadequate artificial light and at times in rain, sleet or snow; subject to storm work in emergencies during any period of the 24-hour cycle; subject to cramped or crowded positions and at times slippery or uneven footing.

HAZARDS:

Subject to hazards of street traffic about work location; to some danger of burns or shocks while working around steam and electric mains and services and to the hazards of hauling heavy materials such as poles. Also, subject to minor cuts, bruises and scratches, resulting from working with and around rough tools and materials; at times to some minor risk of injury from falls, or from falling or dropping objects; at times, some risk of cave-ins while working in trenches.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Successfully pass the EEI C.A.S.T. Test or its equivalent in the future
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Class A CDL
  • Must be punctual, have reliable attendance, and possess a positive attitude
Hourly Pay:
  • Grade Step IA 056 Step 1 of 3 - 42.63 USD
  • Grade Step IA 056 Step 2 of 3 - 45.46 USD
  • Grade Step IA 056 Step 3 of 3 (Top Step) - 49.33 USD
