Apprentice I: Operations
JOB SUMMARY
The three-year Apprenticeship Program gives motivated employees an opportunity for supervised on-the-job training in a wide variety of work including preventive maintenance, plumbing, electric, HVAC/controls, and general maintenance. The goal for this Program is to better prepare our employees for leadership roles within schools. As a grade 7, the Apprentice will participate in work assignment rotations every 4 months for a two-year period between Preventive Maintenance, Maintenance, and School-based facilities. The period of rotation and length of apprenticeship may be subject to change based on the needs of Operations. The third year of the Apprenticeship Program involves working closely with the Preventive Maintenance Office to provide support services throughout school facilities. Starting the third year, the Apprentice is eligible to apply for promotional opportunities. An Apprentice who does not apply for or is not selected for a promotional opportunity may be subject to job placement by Operations as needed. The Apprentice will work occasional overtime (summer and other peak periods), mid-shift, and night work based on work assignment rotation. Note: A satisfactory rating is required for at least two out of three work assignment rotations during the first year to remain in the program. If ineligible to remain in the program the apprentice will return to his/her former position or to a comparable position. If during the first year an apprentice has one work assignment rotation that is rated unsatisfactory, he/she will be given the opportunity to repeat the rotation. A satisfactory rating on all three rotations of the first year of the program is required to advance to the second year of the program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists in performing preventive maintenance on all types of equipment throughout buildings such as air handling units, roof top units, exhaust fans, cooling towers, periodic changing of filters on/in HVAC equipment, and changing belts.
- Assists with making minor maintenance repairs and adjustments, such as cleaning clogged plumbing fixtures, replacing electric bulbs, fuses, and ballasts.
- Assists with opening, closing, and locking buildings and gates for meetings and other evening activities. Assists with monitoring daily building security and responds to emergencies as directed.
- Assists with assigning and inspecting work of the custodians involved in the cleaning and general upkeep of the school.
- Assists with HVAC systems to troubleshoot operations of HVAC equipment.
- Maintains records of completed work electronically and hard copy such as chiller and boiler logs and walk in refrigerators and freezers. Submits utility, generator, and diesel fuel readings electronically. Generates work orders through the Work Management System as needed.
- Participates in snow removal.
- Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Education
- High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required; and
- Technical or Vocational School Beyond High School in a maintenance trade preferred.
Experience
- One (1) year custodian experience and required.
- One (1) year building mechanical equipment service or building operator experience preferred;
- Or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities deemed sufficient to prepare the applicant to successfully perform the duties of the position.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
- Ability to read and follow operating procedures for all machinery and equipment related to the preventive maintenance program or operation of a school facility.
- Ability to work from verbal or written instructions (may include blueprints or engineering drawings).
- Ability to demonstrate progression in learning mechanical/electrical skills.
- Requires commitment to Apprenticeship Program by demonstrating initiative and willingness to learn.
- Ability to provide good customer service.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
- Ability to employ business technology tools (e.g. E-mail, AACPS Intranet, electronic benefits enrollment tool, Microsoft Office Suite, etc.).
- Must provide basic hand tools.
Licenses and Certifications
Employee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment as a condition of employment.
- Upon hire, Introduction to School Facilities Boiler Plant Safety & Procedures Certificate issued by AACPS or equivalent outside course required; or
- Consideration will be given to candidates who can achieve a passing grade on Introduction to School Facilities Boiler Plant Safety & Procedures Certificate issued by AACPS or equivalent outside course required; and
- Upon hire, Leadership Training or Certificate Course issued by AACPS or equivalent outside course required; or
- First available after appointment Leadership Training or Certificate Course issued by AACPS or equivalent outside course required; and
- Upon hire, Driver's License (DL) Class C Non-Commercial issued by Maryland or State of Legal Residence (MVA/DMV) required.
- Proof of a good driving record required.
- Daily access to reliable transportation.

CAREER LADDER REQUIREMENTS
Eligibility for Consideration for Advancement from Lower Grade to Higher Grade requires:
- Two (2) years continuous successful experience in the position at the Lower Grade level.
- Mastery of all responsibilites and duties of the position.
- Achievement of Professional Certification, License, or evidence of course completion in pursuit of such certification or license, if applicable.
- Evidence of completion of additional training that may be recommended by supervisor and/or participation in approved professional development programs or courses, approved in advance by the supervisor. Successful completion of a minimum of one professional development within the last two years is required. Successful completion of job specific professional developments identified on the job description, performance evaluations and/or the supervisor's documented recommendation are required.
- Achievement of identified goals as they relate to the needs of the district and as established by the supervisor.
Additional Requirements for Advancement from Lower Grade to Higher Grade requires:
- Successful completion of the first available AACPS Leadership Training/Certificate Course after appointment if not satisfied at initial hire.
- This is a three-year Apprenticeship Program. At a grade 07, the work assignment rotations will be every four (4) months for a two-year period between Preventive Maintenance, Maintenance, and School-Based Facilities. If the period of rotation and length of apprenticeship changes based on the needs of Operations, to qualify for a career ladder upgrade, two (2) years in this program will be required.
- The third year of the Apprenticeship Program involves working closely with the Preventive Maintenance Office to provide support services throughout school facilities.
- Note: While a satisfactory rating is required for at least two out of three work assignment rotations during the first year to remain in the program, eligibility for a career ladder upgrade requires an above satisfactory performance evaluation for the two most recent consecutive years. An unsatisfactory evaluation within the two years whether the option to repeat the unsatisfactory rotation is offered to complete the program successfully would result in ineligibility for a career ladder upgrade request. While a satisfactory rating on all three rotations of the first year of the program is required to advance to the second year of the program, eligibility for a career ladder upgrade requires an above satisfactory performance evaluation for the two most recent consecutive years.
