Job description

Apprentice HVAC Service Technician
Supervised work in the field

This position is for a developing HVAC technician who wants to learn through service visits and routine maintenance alongside a qualified tradesperson. You will prepare materials, assist with assigned steps, observe how a problem is investigated, and keep accurate service notes. Work that calls for independent certification, sign-off, or advanced diagnosis remains with the qualified technician.

The role is full-time, field-based, and pays $24.25-$30.50 per hour. You will travel to customer sites with the service team, follow site and employer safety instructions, and learn the equipment and procedures used in the position.

Before a visit, you may review a work order, confirm assigned parts or tools are available, and check the location and access instructions. At the site, you can assist with visual checks and approved maintenance tasks under direction. The supervising technician may ask you to record a reading, prepare a component, or help return the work area to a safe condition. If you are unsure of a step, stop and ask. A customer's technical question requiring a conclusion should go to the person authorized to answer it.

A supervised visit also has a beginning and an end beyond the repair itself. Before work starts, listen to the customer's description while the technician establishes the scope. During the visit, keep materials organized so the qualified person can work safely. Before leaving, help check that tools are accounted for, the site is left in the required condition, and the service record is complete. These habits make you useful to the team while you build the knowledge needed for more complex technical tasks. They also show respect for the customer's property.

Practical work and habits
  • Prepare assigned tools and materials for a scheduled visit.
  • Follow instructions for protecting the customer's work area.
  • Assist with routine maintenance within your training.
  • Record observations and readings accurately.
  • Learn how the supervising technician diagnoses a reported fault.
  • Keep equipment and the site orderly during the job.
  • Report an unexpected condition before proceeding.
  • Communicate courteously with customers and site workers.
  • Confirm what belongs in the service record before leaving.

An interest in mechanical systems and some practical familiarity with tools are useful. Trade training or an existing apprenticeship record is an advantage, though the employer may consider applicants earlier in their path when the applicable apprentice requirements are met. You should be punctual, safety-conscious, and candid about what you have learned. The employer will explain the registration, driving, and other qualifications required for its assignments.

The work may involve equipment that looks familiar but has a different configuration or site condition. Treat the work order as a starting point and listen to the qualified technician’s instructions for that installation. A reading only helps when it is taken from the correct place and recorded with enough context. If you see wear, damage, or an unfamiliar condition, report what you observe without claiming a diagnosis. Developing that distinction between observation and conclusion is part of becoming a competent service technician.

Learning with accountability

Good progress comes from preparing for a task, observing carefully, and then performing appropriate work with guidance. It does not come from pretending to understand an instruction or attempting a restricted task independently. The service record should show what was done and what the qualified technician concluded. As your ability develops, you may be given more responsibility within the supervision and training rules that apply to the trade.

Customer service also matters in field work. Arrive ready to listen to site instructions, take care around the customer's property, and pass questions you cannot answer to your supervisor. Reliable habits make it easier for a skilled technician to teach and for customers to trust the team.
