Job description

Join a team of Apprentice Diesel Mechanics with Union Pacific, a legacy of over 150 years of locomotive repair!

Our apprentices inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain the engine and mechanical components of diesel-electric locomotives in our locomotive shops. Powered by our dedicated team, we invite you to join us.

Accountabilities
  1. Conduct job briefings to ensure safe and effective coordination of activities. Keep work areas, tools, and equipment clean and in proper working order.
  2. Repair, replace, or rebuild locomotive and diesel engine components as needed.
  3. Develop and maintain positive relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and customers. Handle conflicts effectively.
  4. Prepare equipment and materials, and operate measuring instruments (micrometers, tape measures, dial calipers), precision machines (drill and punch presses, bench lathes), hand tools, and material handling equipment efficiently.
  5. Diagnose malfunctions in diesel engines, air compressors, and other locomotive mechanical systems.
  6. Communicate technical information, job procedures, and work-related updates via writing, in-person, telephone, radio, and intercom.
  7. Perform additional duties as assigned.
  8. Read, interpret, and utilize diagrams, schematics, blueprints, graphs, and charts. Input information into computers as needed.
  9. Inspect and service the diesel locomotive fleet in compliance with company, federal, and industry standards.
Qualifications - Required
  1. Basic keyboarding skills.
  2. Ability to use both low precision (tape measure, hand level) and high precision (caliper, electronic scale) measuring instruments accurately.
  3. Valid driver's license.
  4. Ability to work independently and in groups effectively.
  5. Proficient verbal and written communication skills.
  6. Ability to interpret tables, charts, graphs, and text to extract relevant information.
  7. Basic arithmetic skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and converting fractions and decimals.
  8. Initiative and responsibility for completing tasks on time with quality. Openness to change.
  9. Understanding and application of basic mechanical principles.
  10. Experience reading and understanding instructions, safety rules, bulletins, and regulatory documents.
