Position Summary

The Apprentice position is responsible for supporting Reg4 Testers with applicable duties, testing, documentation, and reporting of fire protection and life safety systems to help ensure compliance with the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) Chief’s Regulation No. 4 and other applicable codes and standards. This role assists with maintaining systems in proper working order, ensuring accurate and timely reporting, and helping protect people, property, and overall code compliance.

Key Responsibilities and Objectives
  • Assist with annual and periodic testing of fire alarm systems (basic and complex), including associated initiating devices, notification appliances, panels, and related components per applicable code and jurisdiction requirements.
  • Assist with verifying system functionality and document results in accordance with applicable standards and project/customer requirements.
Compliance & Reporting
  • Assist with Completing and submitting test results via the LAFD-approved Compliance Engine within required timelines.
  • Accurately document all deficiencies, and corrective actions.
  • Notify property owners or managers of any deficiencies requiring repair or retesting.
Coordination & Follow‑Up
  • Collaborate with building owners, property managers, contractors, and LAFD representatives to coordinate testing and any necessary repairs.
Knowledge Maintenance
  • Stay current with changes to Chief’s Regulation No. 4, NFPA standards, and other local or state fire codes.
  • Maintain all certifications and attend required renewals and field observations as scheduled.
Technical Skills
  • Familiarity with applicable fire alarm codes and standards (NFPA fire alarm‑related standards and local requirements).
  • Proficiency with mobile devices/tablets and digital reporting platforms.
  • Ability to write clear reports and document deficiencies accurately.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Work is performed primarily in the field at customer job sites, including commercial and industrial environments.
  • Frequent local travel required; occasional out‑of‑town travel may be needed depending on workload and job site requirements.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, climb ladders/stairs, and work in elevated areas, confined spaces, and varying weather conditions.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, safely use ladders, and handle tools/equipment.
