Job summary

Amazon Data Services, Inc. is seeking an Applied Scientist II for Traffic and Network Modeling to advance ML-driven forecasting for AWS networks. Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience building models for business applications.
  • PhD or Master's degree with 4+ years in CS, CE, ML or related field.
  • Experience publishing in top-tier conferences or journals.
  • Experience programming in Java, C++, or Python.
  • Experience with algorithms, data structures, parsing, numerical optimization, data mining, parallel and distributed computing, or HPC.

The Traffic and Network Modeling team builds the science and software that helps AWS decide how to grow and maintain one of the world\'s largest networks. We combine rigorous scientific modeling with modern ML and solid engineering to solve problems like network capacity planning and infrastructure timing.

Responsibilities
  • Build and validate ML models for network demand forecasting, topology planning, and capacity optimization
  • Collaborate with network engineers, software developers, and supply chain specialists to translate complex infrastructure problems into production-ready scientific solutions
  • Drive hypothesis-driven research to inform business and product roadmap decisions for network traffic modeling
  • Build production systems with engineers to deliver low-latency network forecast predictions and scale system throughput
  • Own problems end-to-end by understanding network needs, distilling them into coherent projects, and implementing solutions with long-term impact
  • Raise the bar by applying scientific rigor, contributing to code reviews, design discussions, and knowledge sharing
  • Tackle hard, ambiguous, high-impact challenges and drive them to resolution
  • Learn broadly by collaborating with network engineers, applied scientists, and software engineers to leverage diverse perspectives and Amazon\'s resources
  • Work backwards from customers by starting with customer problems, designing elegant solutions, and implementing them for speed and scalability
Basic Qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience building models for business applications
  • PhD, or Master\'s degree with 4+ years of CS, CE, ML or related field experience
  • Experience in patents or publications at top-tier peer-reviewed conferences or journals
  • Experience programming in Java, C++, Python or related language
  • Experience in algorithms and data structures, parsing, numerical optimization, data mining, parallel and distributed computing, or high-performance computing
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in professional software development

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location. Amazon also offers comprehensive benefits including health insurance (medical, dental, vision, prescription, basic life and AD&D insurance and option for supplemental life plans, EAP, mental health support, medical advice line, Flexible Spending Accounts, Adoption and Surrogacy Reimbursement), 401(k) matching, paid time off, and parental leave.
