Job description

AWS Infrastructure Services (AIS) is responsible for designing, planning, delivering, and operating all of AWS's global infrastructure - in short, we keep the cloud running. Our teams include software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security professionals, operations managers, and many other essential roles. Together, we collaborate across AWS to uphold the highest standards of safety and reliability while delivering virtually unlimited capacity at the lowest possible cost.

Within AIS, the Traffic and Network Modeling team develops the scientific models and software systems that guide how AWS grows and sustains one of the world's largest networks. We blend rigorous modeling techniques with modern machine learning and scalable network simulations to answer critical questions: How much network capacity is needed, and where? What should be built, and on what timeline?

We're seeking an experienced Software Development Engineer to advance our network simulation platform and leverage agentic AI to automate capacity planning. In this role, you'll focus on the engineering: scaling and extending the network simulations and services that model network failures across diverse fabrics, and developing agentic AI workflows that automate troubleshooting and reduce toil.

Key job responsibilities
  • Design, build, and deliver scalable software systems
  • Solve broadly defined problems by designing the right solutions, then owning them through design, implementation, deployment and operations
  • Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks and reliability issues in production systems
  • Participate in architecture and design reviews, providing technical guidance to the team
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams and leadership to gather requirements, shape technical designs and deliver innovative products
  • Apply engineering best practices across the full development lifecycle - coding standards, code reviews, source control, build processes, test automation and operations
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to a strong engineering culture
A day in the life

You’ll write and review code daily as you build the services and tools that power the team's mission. You’ll dig into large-scale network simulations to find and fix performance and accuracy issues, prototype and validate solutions against production data, and build agentic AI workflows that automate troubleshooting and reduce toil.

You’ll partner closely with scientists and engineers on the Traffic and Network Modeling team, as well as network planning and capacity teams across AWS Infrastructure Services who depend on your systems to decide what infrastructure to build and when. You’ll work in an agile, sometimes ambiguous environment, use data to make decisions, and grow alongside teammates who share your passion for the mission.

About the team

Our team is dedicated to supporting new members. We have a broad mix of experience levels and tenures, and we’re building an environment that celebrates knowledge-sharing and mentorship. Our senior members enjoy one-on-one mentoring and thorough, but kind, code reviews. We care about career growth and strive to assign projects that help our team members develop your engineering expertise so you feel empowered to take on more complex tasks in the future.

Basic Qualifications:
  • 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
  • 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
  • 2+ years of designing and developing large-scale, multi-tiered, multi-threaded, embedded or distributed software applications, tools, systems, and services using: C#, C++, Java, or Perl experience
  • 3+ years of building complex software systems experience
  • Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
  • Experience programming with at least one software programming language
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
