Job summary

OpenAI is seeking an Applied Risk Standards Architect to lead the development of standards for applied risk in AI applications, including mental health, youth safety, age assurance, efficacy, reliability, and privacy.

You will turn internal research, safety policies, and evaluation methods into measurable, auditable standards, author proposals, and engage with ISO/IEC, NIST, INCITS, and other bodies to advance responsible deployment.

Qualifications

• Experience turning research and safety policies into credible standards or assessment methods.
• Ability to engage with standards bodies (ISO/IEC, NIST, INCITS) and drive consensus.
• Strong collaboration across Safety Systems, Research, Product, Legal, and policy teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead development of applied AI risk standards for multiple risk areas.
• Turn internal research and evaluation methods into testable standards and criteria.
• Draft proposals and negotiate requirements with internal and external stakeholders.
• Coordinate with frontier risk‑management and independent‑assessment standards workstreams.
• Represent OpenAI in priority standards bodies and maintain implementation handoffs.
