Job summary

Southland Industries seeks a senior steam specialist to provide expertise across Estimating, Engineering, VDC, Field, Service and Commissioning teams. You will develop steam-related opportunities with clients and guide standards, projects and personnel.

You will lead preconstruction engagements, mentor staff, and ensure designs comply with Southland standards, while shaping steam design practices and contributing to QA/QC throughout the project life cycle.

Qualifications

  • 4-yr. engineering degree or commensurate levels of technical training and related experience
  • Extensive (10+ years) experience/knowledge of construction, design, finance, and management
  • Ideal candidate would have 15+ years of experience in steam applications
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to plan construction projects from beginning to end and understand design impact on construction
  • Active participation in design charettes and guiding Engineering Team
  • Develop scopes of work for project development
  • Foster and develop less-experienced personnel
  • Develop steam training programs and share knowledge
  • Strong leadership and motivational skills across departments

Responsibilities

  • Represent the Southland team as a subject matter expert to external project teams during preconstruction phases
  • Initiate and maintain engagement during preconstruction to ensure high-quality steam guidance
  • Communicate steam requirements to business development, engineering, estimating, and construction PMs
  • Mentor on complex designs and serve as SME on applicable projects
  • Provide insights into steam scope impacts on design schedules and construction schedules
  • Contribute to steam aspects of RFPs for design or construction services
  • Issue RFPs and contracts to consultants for subconsultant design services
  • Ensure project docs comply with contract requirements and standards
  • Develop Southland steam design and construction standards
  • Identify risks and plan to mitigate across project phases
  • Train and mentor personnel coordinating design and construction efforts
  • Ensure compliance with engineering standards, codes, specs and design instructions
  • Research and analyze new materials and equipment
  • Identify options to satisfy client requirements and minimize costs
  • Lead development of standards, methods, processes and procedures
  • Write technical narratives for steam design standards and lessons learned
  • Contribute to QA/QC and provide feedback for quality improvement
  • Provide direction for on-site surveys to collect steam design data
  • Determine methods/solutions for complex steam applications

Position Summary

Provide expertise in steam applications to Estimating, Engineering, VDC, Field, Service and Commissioning teams. Develop new business opportunities related to steam applications with new and existing clients. Provide technical guidance to all of Southland in the development of standards, projects, and people.

Position Details
  • Represent the Southland team as a subject matter expert to external project teams during preconstruction phase of projects (A/E, GC, Owner, other disciplines).
  • Initiate and maintain engagement during the preconstruction phase of a project to ensure the delivery of high-quality expertise to facilitate successful construction activities within the prescribed time frames. Make presentations when necessary.
  • Communicate and manage goals and requirements of steam application with business development, engineering, estimating, and construction project management.
  • Mentor and provide guidance on complex designs and technical issues. Serve as steam subject matter expert on projects that require such expertise.
  • Provide insight into impacts of steam scope of work on project design schedule and participate in creation of construction schedule.
  • Provide insight into steam aspects of Request for Proposal for design or construction services.
  • Issue Request for Proposals and contracts to Professional Service consultants including architects and other engineering disciplines for subconsultant design services.
  • For steam scope of work on projects, ensure project documents are in compliance with contract requirements and Southland standards.
  • Develop Southland steam design and construction standards.
  • Identify, assess, and plan to avoid or counteract risk in all phases of assigned projects.
  • Train and mentor Southland personnel while coordinating design and construction efforts to aid in development of their skills.
  • Ensure compliance with engineering standards, codes, specifications and design instruction.
  • Research and analyze new materials and equipment (functionality, performance, reliability, quality, cost and contract conformance).
  • Identify design, process and equipment options that can satisfy client requirements, minimize costs and limit potential operational problems.
  • Lead developing standards, methods, processes and procedures. Develop and host training classes as required.
  • Write technical narratives to capture steam design standards, lessons learned, and constructability input.
  • Actively participate in the design QA/QC process to deliver high-quality projects within the prescribed time frames. Provide meaningful feedback on the content within the documents to aid in quality improvement.
  • Provide direction for preparation of on-site field surveys to collect or deliver steam design and engineering data.
  • Determine methods and solutions for complex steam applications and identify the most efficient and acceptable resolution.
  • Provide steam expertise to business development teams during pursuit of projects. Develop conceptual designs to support estimating.
  • Perform additional assignments as requested/needed.

  • Detailed understanding of steam system costs
  • Detailed understanding of steam design and systems within all MEP markets (i.e. New Work, Industrial, and Existing Buildings)
  • Extensive knowledge of steam design techniques
  • Ability to work autonomously and in a team environment
  • Advanced computer proficiency, including MS Office
  • Familiarity with Autodesk Products
  • Understanding of BIM requirements
  • Detailed understanding of Project Life Cycle
