Job summary

Ocean Optics in Pacifica, California, is seeking an Applications Engineer to collaborate with sales and customers to specify and configure spectroscopic solutions that fit precise needs. You will engage as a trusted advisor and develop OEM product specifications while supporting testing at customer sites.

The ideal candidate has 4+ years in Applications Engineering, deep spectroscopy knowledge, and the ability to translate objectives into tangible results.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience in Applications Engineering.
  • BS or higher in a technical field; MS/PhD preferred.
  • Deep knowledge of spectroscopic principles.

Responsibilities

  • Interact with sales to understand application needs and recommend product configurations.
  • Act as trusted advisor, advising customers on solutions options.
  • Develop product specifications for OEM customers.
  • Support qualification testing of new products at customer sites.
  • Record issues and document resolutions; identify improvement opportunities.
  • Deliver remote and on-site services; travel to customer sites as needed.

Drawing from disciplines including systems, optics, mechanical, electrical, and software engineering, and industrial design we’re assembling the capacity to provide even deeper customer collaboration on highly precise challenges across industries.As an Applications Engineer, you will:Work directly with sales force to interact with customers to understand their application needs to recommend the best product configuration for them.Act as customer trusted advisor, consult customer about solutions options after understanding their needs & expectations.Develop Product Specifications for OEM customers.Constantly engage with existing and potential customers. Identify their needs, ability to articulate customer’s problem statements, and propose solutions that will help customers be successful.Support qualification testing of new products at customer sites .Accurately record customer issues and document resolutions.Identify opportunities for product and solution improvement, feedback to R&D, and influence design/product requirements.Maintain a thorough understanding and broad knowledge of customers, competitors, and market products and solutions offered.Perform remote & on-site services as required. May require travel to customer sites .Deliver technical demo/training/knowledge transfer to customers/partners as required.Other duties as assigned.ABOUT THE CANDIDATEThe ideal candidate brings a natural curiosity and passion for being an assistant, tackling ever-changing challenges and has a knack for making things happen. A “can-do” attitude, collaborative spirit and flexible work style are also essential in this role. This person should a self-starter and bring extensive experience in Applications Engineering.Our ideal candidate brings should possess the following combination of experience and qualities:Experienced with 4+ years or more of experience and a degree in a technical field. In depth knowledge of spectroscopic principles.Expertise in one or more of the following technical areas: chemistry, biochemistry, optics, or an Engineering disciplines.Self-starter able to think and act independently to translate general objectives into tangible results, with a record of delivering successful designs on schedule.Be able to help in negotiation, persuasion, and problem-solving skills.Have exceptional organizational and time management skills.Always approachable, have the drive to take initiative, and enjoy connecting with people.Create opportunities to promote a solution that brings value to the customers.Energetic, willing to learn and explore technology with a can-do attitude.People-centric focus with the ability to collaborate with all teammates across the organization.Strong initiative, work ethic, and levels of enthusiasm.Understanding of general business and financial principles.Excellent presentations and technical documentation skills to communicate internally and externally to the organization.Extremely good with interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.BS or higher in a technical field (M.S or PhD preferred).ABOUT THE COMPANYOcean Optics pioneered miniature spectrometers and deliver spectral solutions to researchers, OEMs, and industrial customers, also designs and builds industrial-grade photonics systems for material inspection, chemical identification, and quality assurance.At Ocean We Measure What Matters, and our Mission is to design precise photonics systems to solve customer measurement challenges to make the world safer, cleaner, and healthier. This role is also eligible for a variable compensation plan, with On-Target Earnings (OTE) of $160,000 annually when company performance goals are achieved. Actual compensation will be determined based on factors such as skills, experience, qualifications, and work location, in accordance with the applicable law.
