Job summary

Taylor Hopkinson is seeking an Application Engineer to join a Tier 1 transformer manufacturer expanding into a new high-growth vertical. Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
• 3+ years of transformer design/application engineering or technical sales support.
• Ability to read and interpret single-line diagrams, electrical specifications, and customer requirements.
• Familiarity with IEEE C57 series, ANSI, NEMA, IEC standards and utility specs.

Responsibilities

• Review customer RFQs, single-line diagrams, and project specifications to determine transformer design, ratings, and configuration.
• Develop technical proposals and specification sheets for quotes, ensuring designs meet requirements.
• Serve as the primary technical liaison between customers/EPCs and internal engineering/manufacturing teams.
• Evaluate submittals and drawings for accuracy, compliance, and manufacturability prior to order entry.
• Support pre-sale technical discussions, site assessments, and customer calls to clarify application requirements.
• Identify and resolve discrepancies between customer specs and standard offerings; recommend custom designs.
• Collaborate with engineering on design reviews for non-standard or custom orders.
• Assist with technical training for sales teams to improve quoting accuracy.
• Support compliance with IEEE, ANSI, NEMA, IEC and utility requirements.
• Provide technical input on competitive positioning and differentiators.
• Troubleshoot post-order technical issues with engineering and customer service.

Taylor Hopkinson is currently in active pursuit of an Application Engineer for a Tier 1 tracker manufacturer expanding into a new high-growth vertical. As a fast-growing transformer manufacturer, they are looking for top talent with a clear mission of building something truly special in the power industry.

The Application Engineer serves as the technical backbone of the commercial team, translating customer requirements into accurate technical specifications and design recommendations. This role works closely with sales, inside sales operations, and engineering/manufacturing to ensure every quoted and ordered unit meets customer needs, industry standards, and project requirements.

Responsibilities

• Review customer RFQs, single-line diagrams, and project specifications to determine appropriate transformer design, ratings, and configuration
• Develop technical proposals and specification sheets in support of sales quotes, ensuring designs meet customer, utility, and regulatory requirements
• Serve as the primary technical liaison between customers/EPCs and internal engineering and manufacturing teams
• Evaluate technical submittals and drawings for accuracy, compliance, and manufacturability prior to order entry
• Support pre-sale technical discussions, site assessments, and customer calls to clarify application requirements (loading, environmental conditions, BIL, impedance, cooling class, etc.)
• Identify and resolve technical discrepancies between customer specifications and standard product offerings, recommending custom or modified designs when needed
• Collaborate with engineering on design reviews for non-standard or custom transformer orders
• Assist with technical training for sales and inside sales operations teams to improve quoting accuracy and customer conversations
• Support compliance with industry standards (IEEE, ANSI, NEMA, IEC) and utility-specific requirements
• Provide technical input on competitive positioning, helping the sales team understand differentiators against competitor designs
• Troubleshoot post-order technical issues in coordination with engineering, quality, and customer service

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical field (or equivalent industry experience)
• 3+ years of experience in transformer design, application engineering, or technical sales support - MV/HV power equipment strongly preferred
• Strong understanding of transformer fundamentals: impedance, BIL, cooling classes, loading, and electrical protection coordination
• Ability to read and interpret single-line diagrams, electrical specifications, and customer technical requirements
• Familiarity with relevant industry standards (IEEE C57 series, ANSI, NEMA, IEC) and utility specification requirements
• Strong communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical concepts for both engineering and non-technical/commercial audiences
• Proficiency with CRM and/or ERP systems; CAD or design software experience a plus
• Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects
