Job Summary

The Michigan Medicine Department of Radiation Oncology is seeking an experienced and motivated software engineering professional to build and maintain clinical applications that support safe and effective radiation therapy.

This position supports team-based workflows across a broad range of radiation therapy areas, including treatment planning, medical imaging, quality assurance, and clinical workflow automation. Alongside a dedicated team of software developers, you will collaborate with radiation oncologists, medical physicists, dosimetrists, radiation therapists, clinical informatics specialists, enterprise IT teams, and commercial system vendors.

Prior healthcare or radiation oncology experience is welcome but not required. We are looking for a strong software engineer who is interested in learning the clinical domain and applying sound engineering practices to meaningful problems in patient care with a commitment to patient safety. Responsibilities

Application Development and Maintenance (60%)

• Participate in the full software development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, architecture, design, implementation, testing, deployment, documentation, production support, and maintenance.
• Design, develop, and maintain enterprise applications using Java, Spring Boot, Spring Framework, and related technologies.
• Develop modern web-based user interfaces using JavaScript or TypeScript frameworks such as Angular or React.
• Build secure, scalable, maintainable, and well-documented REST APIs and backend services.
• Develop applications and interfaces that support radiation therapy planning, treatment delivery, clinical workflow, reporting, visualization, and data validation.
• Translate complex clinical and operational requirements into reliable, testable, and maintainable software solutions.
• Diagnose production issues, integration failures, performance problems, and data inconsistencies through structured troubleshooting and root-cause analysis.
• Modernize, migrate, or replace legacy and end-of-life applications while maintaining clinical functionality, data integrity, and continuity of operations.
• Apply object-oriented programming, design patterns, SOLID principles, clean-code practices, secure coding, automated testing, and appropriate application architecture.

Clinical Informatics and Systems Integration (30%)

• Collaborate with clinical and technical stakeholders to design and maintain informatics tools supporting Radiation Oncology protocols and workflows.
• Develop workflow applications that automate clinical data processing, validation, communication, task management, notifications, and reporting.
• Develop dashboards and web applications that provide authorized users with timely access to clinical radiotherapy data and operational metrics.
• Integrate applications with treatment planning systems, oncology information systems, imaging systems, databases, electronic health record platforms, vendor APIs, and institutional services.
• Design and maintain relational database structures, SQL queries, stored procedures, data-access components, interfaces, and data-transformation processes.
• Support secure clinical data exchange, mapping, reconciliation, audit logging, authentication, authorization, and role-based access control.
• Evaluate artificial intelligence, large language models, rule engines, cloud services, and other emerging technologies for appropriate use in clinical and operational workflows.

Software Quality and Documentation (10%)

• Create and maintain software requirements, architecture, design, testing, validation, deployment, support, and troubleshooting documentation.
• Develop unit, integration, API, system, regression, security, and user-acceptance testing appropriate to each application.
• Participate in code reviews, architecture reviews, security reviews, testing reviews, and peer review of departmental applications.
• Maintain traceability among requirements, implementation, testing, releases, and production changes.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of coding standards, testing practices, CI/CD processes, monitoring, documentation, and software quality procedures.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
• Five or more years of professional software engineering, systems analysis, or enterprise application development experience.
• Strong proficiency in at least one of the following:
• Java and Spring/Spring Boot
• C# and WPF
• Experience developing, testing, deploying, and supporting production applications.
• Experience with relational databases, SQL, APIs, or systems integration.
• Knowledge of object-oriented design, software architecture, automated testing, Git, and secure coding.
• Ability to create clear software requirements, design documentation, test plans, release notes, installation guides, and support procedures.
• Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary clinical and technical teams.
• Ability and willingness to learn radiation oncology workflows, healthcare technologies, clinical terminology, and emerging software development practices.
