Job description

UCSF Health is seeking an Interoperability & Integration Specialist to join a small team delivering secure, reliable clinical system integrations within the Health Enterprise. This role is ideal for a hands‑on integration engineer who excels at connecting systems end‑to‑end-translating data, orchestrating workflows, and ensuring dependable service‑to‑service communication.

The successful candidate will work as part of a broader team focused on delivering and supporting clinical applications, partnering closely with UCSF Health's enterprise integration teams (including MuleSoft and Epic Bridges), the Epic and clinical applications support team, and AI team to deliver interoperable solutions. While the role requires a working knowledge of MuleSoft, APIs, and HL7-based integration approaches, the primary focus will be to design and build prototype integrations using established integration patterns (e.g., FHIR-based APIs and web services, HL7), validate feasibility and data flow, and collaborate with the enterprise teams to align prototypes with UCSF standards for scalability, reliability, safe deployment, and ongoing monitoring and maintenance of custom solutions.

Department Overview

The Application Solutions team is responsible for designing, testing, and implementing new features and systems that support the UCSF Health mission. This includes interoperability with third‑party systems and devices, support of existing technology, and partnering with our clinical and business colleagues to provide solutions which address complex problems.

Responsibilities
  • Plans, designs, develops, modifies, and deploys advanced systems integration solutions and engineers advanced solutions to address integration of vendor, community source, and locally developed hardware and / or software systems and subsystems to achieve an integrated implementation.
  • Initiates and / or leads analyses and assessment of potential products during early project phases to identify and achieve high level system integration objectives and makes recommendations. Identifies, evaluates, recommends and leads implementation changes to existing tools, or new tools needed, research or coordinate with vendors to identify solutions.
  • Utilizes detailed business process knowledge in order to address technical objectives and address all phases of the business process and technical life‑cycle.
  • Leads or oversees technical collaboration teams on advanced system interconnectivity concepts, design, and testing requirements. Understands and organizes the requirements and changes, and advises and may collaborate with system and architecture groups on incorporating needed requirements and implement testing of completed requirements.
  • Develops advanced monitoring protocols across multiple networks and platforms, including traffic and usage, performance of the system, metric testing, troubleshooting and identification of metric issues and system optimization for advanced complex multi‑platform environments.
  • Provides configuration management support. Develops and oversees the build environment, the source code control system and the issue tracking systems. Develops and oversees the creation and testing of builds, resolves issues, applies labels to file and communicates build status. Oversees building scripts and installation procedures and development and maintenance of an automated build process with automatic notification of build and unit test failure problems to responsible engineers. Oversees project software and documentation inventory and configuration baselines.
  • Provides guidance and advanced knowledge of systems integration for EDI database analysis, design, and operations and ensures security of data, systems and networks.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • 5+ years related experience
  • Experience with complex multi‑platform troubleshooting in a multi‑platform environment.
  • Strong hands‑on expertise with FHIR APIs (resource modeling, REST patterns, JSON, versioning), including real‑world troubleshooting and validation.
  • Experience building/configuring web services (middleware, integration services, API gateways or similar), including secure auth patterns and operational monitoring/logging
  • Advanced knowledge of systems integration deploying complex systems integration solutions.
  • Advanced skills associated with system integration design, modification, implementation, and deployment in a complex environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop complex conversion and system implementation plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand functional needs of the campus / health and / or UC system and how systems can support those needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to interface with senior‑level technical and non‑technical management on a regular basis.
  • Demonstrated ability to create software specifications.
  • Experience developing and implementing complex project plans.
  • Experience researching and evaluating new technology and solutions for complex environments.
  • Ability to impart knowledge to senior‑level technical and non‑technical audiences and to influence outcomes to meet objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify software and hardware interdependencies in a complex multi‑platform environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop solutions for complex business and systems/custom, / ad‑hoc solutions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 3+ years experience in system integration using APIs, HL7, or custom web services
  • Epic application certification
  • Mulesoft Developer Certification level 2
  • Demonstrated experience delivering healthcare integrations/interoperability in a production environment (health system, digital health, or healthcare integration vendor).
  • Strong hands‑on expertise with FHIR APIs (resource modeling, REST patterns, JSON, versioning), including real‑world troubleshooting and validation..
  • Working understanding of Epic EHR integration concepts and how clinical data is represented/used
  • Experience with identification and use of code libraries and open‑source forums.
  • Experience with planning for deployment and creation of feedback mechanisms.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with monitoring tools, performance, and systems optimization, including intermediate knowledge of security for data, data transfers and systems.
