About the role
We are building the next generation of solid‑state, grid‑interactive power blocks that enable high‑density, flexible power delivery for datacenters, renewable energy systems, and advanced microgrids. The Application Engineer is responsible for defining, adapting, and supporting Solid‑State Transformer (SST) and microgrid solutions for data center applications with integrated distributed energy resources and storage.
This role serves as the technical bridge between customers, utilities, and internal product teams, translating aggressive AI/ML load requirements and DER capabilities into reliable, scalable, and utility‑compliant system solutions.
Key responsibilities
- Work with customers and internal teams to define SST and microgrid system architectures for AI/ML data centers.
- Support architectures involving:
- Behind‑the‑meter and hybrid microgrids
- Grid‑interactive and islanded operation
- Evaluate technical tradeoffs related to efficiency, redundancy (N, N+1, 2N), fault tolerance, and scalability.
Customer & Utility Technical Engagement
- Act as the primary technical interface with Hyperscalers, colocation providers, EPCs, and utilities.
- Support customer discussions on:
- Load step response and AI/ML workload dynamics
- Power quality, reliability, and resilience
- Support utility‑facing discussions on interconnection, protection, and operational impacts.
Standards, Interconnection & Compliance Support
- Partner with standards and certification teams to ensure application designs are certifiable and utility‑acceptable.
Technical Proposal & Pre‑Sales Support
- Develop technical proposals, system block diagrams, single‑line diagrams, and performance analyses.
- Support RFP and RFQ responses, including:
- System sizing and configuration
- Operating modes and use cases
- Grid support and resiliency capabilities
- Support cost‑performance trade studies and solution comparisons.
Internal Engineering Collaboration
- Control and software teams
- Mechanical and thermal engineering
- Validate solutions against real‑world data center operating conditions.
- Provide feedback from customers and the field into product roadmap discussions.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or related field.
- 5+ years of experience in application engineering, systems engineering, or technical pre‑sales for power systems.
- Strong understanding of:
- High‑power AI/ML and HPC load characteristics
- Grid‑connected and behind‑the‑meter systems
- DER technologies and integration concepts
- Experience developing system‑level architectures and interpreting single‑line diagrams.
- Proven ability to work directly with customers and utilities in technical roles.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering or Power Systems.
- Direct experience with:
- Microgrid systems (grid‑following, grid‑forming, islanded operation)
- Medium‑voltage power electronics or SST architectures
- Experience supporting utility‑scale or commercial/industrial microgrids in the US.
- Familiarity with FERC, state‑level interconnection frameworks, and utility rulebooks.
- Active participation in IEEE, UL STPs, or industry consortiums.
- Experience supporting products from prototype through commercial release.
