Job summary

Office of the Ohio Public Defender in Columbus, OH is seeking an Assistant Public Defender in the Appeals & Postconviction (APC) Department to represent adults in direct appeals and, on a case-by-case basis, file postconviction petitions and writs.

You will manage your own caseload, review trial records, draft appellate briefs, present oral argument, and travel as needed to meet clients and court deadlines. A robust commitment to justice and professional excellence is essential.

Qualifications

• Admission to the Ohio bar is required.
• Experience in appellate or postconviction work is preferred.
• Ability to manage a caseload independently.

Responsibilities

• Manage your own caseload under the supervision of an experienced supervising attorney.
• Review trial records and identify viable appellate claims.
• Work with clients to identify their goals and a strategy to try to achieve them.
• Draft appellate briefs.
• Present oral argument; and travel as necessary to visit clients, review records, and present oral argument.
