Job description

General Description

This position is responsible for appellate matters handled by the Criminal District Attorney and represents the State in the District Courts, Court of Appeals, and the Court of Criminal Appeals.

Responsibilities
  • Responsible and represents the State in post‑conviction appellate matters, including direct appeals, post‑conviction writs, and Chapter 64 DNA litigation.
  • Prepares notices of appeal, State’s briefs, Petitions for Discretionary Review, post‑conviction writ answers, and other responses, motions, and filings to resolve post‑conviction matters.
  • Represents the State at writ hearings and oral arguments in the First and Fourteenth Court of Appeals and at the Court of Criminal Appeals.
  • Conducts legal research on complex legal issues.
  • Provides legal research and legal advice to trial attorneys as needed.
  • Advises and counsels executive‑level employees and assistant criminal district attorneys on legal issues.
  • Provides training regarding legal areas, as requested.
  • Handles motions for expunction and nondisclosure of records.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited Law School and admission to the practice of law in the State of Texas.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in the practice of law, litigation, jury trials, appeals or closely related experience.
  • Member of good standing with the State Bar of Texas.
Physical Demands / Work Environment

The work is typically performed sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects. The work is typically performed in an office or courtroom.

Salary
  • 0-3 years: $105,000.00
  • 4-6 years: $115,000.00
  • 7+ years: $125,000.00
