Job description

General Description

The purpose of this class is to perform difficult professional work trying cases, providing legal counsel to the court, prosecuting criminal cases, and performing other complex legal functions.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Maintain the misdemeanor docket of class A and B prosecutions.
• Prepare criminal cases for trial; locate and interview witnesses and victims; gather and review evidence; obtain copies of video and audio recordings, 911 calls, and statements; visit crime scenes; plan jury trials; review pertinent case law; create visual aids; consult with police officers, lab analysts, and other expert witnesses.
• Represent the state in drafting complaints, motions, responses, and other documents in relation to the prosecution of criminal cases.
• Represent the state in criminal trials; pick juries, make opening statements, question witnesses, introduce evidence, argue before a judge and jury, and deliver closing arguments.
• Handle daily misdemeanor docket; negotiate dispositions and discovery issues; review criminal cases for appropriate disposition.
• Represent the state in motions to revoke probation and other motion hearings.
• Coordinate with community supervision officers concerning terms and conditions of probation, progress of probationers, and issues regarding revocation, modification, or adjudication of probation.
• Perform a variety of complex, independent duties to final disposition, including discovery, evaluating legal theories and principles, performing research, etc.
• Ensure that information related to cases is disseminated appropriately to the defense attorney of record and securely stored.
• Provide legal counsel to law enforcement during misdemeanor arrests and throughout criminal investigations.
• Perform related work as assigned by supervisors.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Requires graduation from an accredited law school and admission to the practice of law in the State of Texas.

Special Certifications and Licenses

Requires a member of good standing with the State Bar of Texas.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary: 0‑3 years $100,000.00; 4‑6 years $105,000.00; 7+ years $110,000.00.
