Goodell DeVries, Leech & Dann LLP seeks an Associate Attorney to join the Appellate and Critical Motions practice group in Baltimore. The ideal candidate is a gifted legal writer with a passion for research and writing, and experience in appellate matters.

Candidates with appellate and federal clerkship experience or a disagreement with BigLaw’s mass-attrition model are encouraged to apply. Maryland/bar admission preferred, with DC/VA a plus. Competitive benefits and salary offered.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Develop appellate and critical motions strategy with the team.
• Work closely with experienced trial lawyers on complex litigation.
• Represent clients in appellate filings and prepare persuasive briefs and motions.

Goodell, DeVries, Leech & Dann, LLP, an established litigation law firm in Baltimore, is seeking an Associate Attorney to join our rapidly growing Appellate and Critical Motions practice group. We believe that the best lawyers are happy lawyers, and we know that many superb legal writers are laboring in busy but often joyless practices. The ideal candidate will have a passion for legal research and writing, own books by Bryan Garner, Ross Guberman, and Matthew Butterick, and have an existing opinion on the writing styles of Justices Kagan, Roberts, Ginsburg, and Gorsuch. If you consider “appellate nerd” a compliment, or if you’re often torn between your desire to correct other people’s grammar and your desire to have friends, this may be your dream job.

The successful candidate must be a gifted legal writer who is eager to continue developing these skills. Firm favors candidates with appellate and federal clerkship experience or sinking feeling that BigLaw’s mass-attrition business model does not fit their career goals or values. The ideal candidate wants to develop a sustainable, long-term, appellate and motions practice with a national presence while working closely with excellent trial lawyers (often defending health care providers). Most candidates are ready to practice in Maryland, with D.C. and Virginia bar admission a strong plus.
