Job summary

O'Reilly Auto Parts is seeking a Systems Engineer Platform - API Gateway to develop, manage, and optimize enterprise API platforms across cloud and on‑prem environments. You will support a dual-gateway strategy (Apigee X and Kong) while ensuring security, observability, and scalable traffic for enterprise integrations.

Design and implement RESTful APIs, automate infrastructure with Terraform, and drive CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins and GitHub Actions.

Qualifications

• 3+ years in software engineering, platform development, or systems integration with backend and cloud-native experience.
• 2+ years specializing in API management using Apigee and Kong, including proxy development and security.
• Proven ability to design and implement RESTful/events APIs, integrating Java/Python services within microservices and DevOps environments.
• Hands-on experience with GCP services (Cloud Run, Functions, Pub/Sub, IAM) and deploying/managing APIs in Apigee X.
• 3+ years working with Apigee and strong experience with Kong API Gateway, including proxy development and policies.
• Expertise in designing scalable, secure RESTful APIs using OpenAPI/Swagger, with versioning, rate limiting, quotas, caching.
• Advanced programming in Java and Python for backend services and gateway extensions (Node.js/scripting a plus).
• Hands-on experience with CI/CD (Jenkins, GitHub Actions), Terraform-based IaC, and Git-driven releases.
• Deep understanding of API security (OAuth2, JWT, SAML, API keys) and compliance (PCI, SOC2, HIPAA).
• Experience with observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK) and incident response integration.

Responsibilities

• Design and build secure, high-performance APIs for distributed systems.
• Define API specifications (OpenAPI/Swagger) and enforce standards with traffic management.
• Develop functionality in Java/Python and integrate with microservices and third-party systems.
• Manage API gateways (Apigee X, Kong) across cloud and hybrid environments for reliability and latency.
• Automate infrastructure with Terraform and build CI/CD pipelines for API proxies and gateway configs.
• Implement API security using OAuth2, JWT, SAML, and API keys; enforce compliance and Zero Trust.
• Monitor APIs with observability tools, define alerts, and lead incident analysis.
• Collaborate across architecture, DevOps, and security to ensure governance and API-first design.
