Job summary

Van Buskirk Companies is seeking a motivated Residential Maintenance Technician to join its apartment maintenance team in Sioux Falls, SD. You will perform repairs, prep units for new tenants, handle plumbing/electrical tasks, and conduct routine system inspections to ensure quality and tenant satisfaction.

This role requires a high school diploma or equivalent, a valid driver’s license, and the ability to work independently while coordinating with teammates.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical certifications are a plus.
• Proven experience as a Maintenance Technician in property management or similar role.
• Must have valid driver’s license and insurance; travel between complexes is required.
• Strong knowledge of carpentry, mechanical, electrical, and/or plumbing systems.
• Familiarity with hand and power tools used in maintenance and repair work.
• Ability to read technical manuals and drawings to diagnose and troubleshoot issues.
• Excellent problem-solving and communication skills; able to collaborate with team and interact with clients.
• Motivated self-starter who can work independently, set goals, and complete tasks on time.
• Attention to detail with a strong commitment to safety and quality standards.
• Physical ability to lift heavy objects and perform manual tasks for an entire shift.

Responsibilities

• Perform general repairs and maintenance in residential apartments, including drywall repairs, painting, carpentry, appliance repair, and general building upkeep.
• Prepare and repair apartment homes for new tenants to meet move-in standards.
• Restore damages, handle minor renovations, and install or remove appliances as needed.
• Address minor plumbing issues by replacing or repairing components.
• Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, and technical issues efficiently.
• Conduct regular inspections of building systems (HVAC, plumbing, electrical) to detect potential problems early.
• Respond to maintenance requests and emergencies promptly to minimize downtime.
• Remove snow and ice from sidewalks and walkways to ensure safety.
• Maintain tools and equipment in optimal working condition.
• Collaborate with team members to complete tasks on time and keep logs/reports of activities.
• Recommend improvements to maintenance procedures and techniques for greater efficiency.

What We Are Looking For:

• High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical certifications are a plus. A combination of education and experience is also acceptable.
• Proven experience as a Maintenance Technician in property management or a similar role.
• Must have valid driver\'s license and insurance; job requires driving between apartment complexes.
• Strong knowledge of carpentry, mechanical, electrical, and/or plumbing systems.
• Familiarity with hand and power tools used in maintenance and repair work.
• Ability to read technical manuals and drawings to diagnose and troubleshoot issues.
