Job summary

Yale NewHaven Health is seeking a laboratory aide to support the Anatomic Pathology team. The role involves accessioning and preparing gyn and nongyn specimens, maintaining logs, and assisting clerical staff with reports.

The position uses the laboratory information system to print patient reports and QM data, and requires standing, PPE use, and careful handling of chemicals. Ideal candidates have a high school diploma (some college preferred) and prior lab experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assists AP clerical staff with patient reports and recalls; handles mailing and faxing tasks.
  • Monitors section supplies and usage; supports cost-saving initiatives.
  • Promotes teamwork, fiscal responsibility, and patient-focused care as part of the hospital mission.
  • Interacts with the lab team to fulfill orders and manage stock levels.

Overview

Maintains all areas of Anatomic Pathology as appropriate; orders and stocks all necessary processing supplies. Accessions and prepares all cytology and surgical pathology specimens. Assures daily quality of preparation and staining in consultation with the general supervisor. Monitors all laboratory equipment and performs maintenance as required by the manufacture's recommendation and contacts vendor for repair if needed. Monitors storage and disposal of specimen containers. Maintains appropriate stain and equipment logs to document maintenance activities. Segregates specimens that may be needed for additional procedures. Assists Cytology with preparation of non-gyn and gyn specimens. Utilizes laboratory database system for specimen accessioning and report generation. Assist anatomic pathology clerical staff with office duties including but not limited to faxing and mailing patient reports and slides. Maintains pathology slide files in accordance with government mandated retention requirements. Maintains knowledge of section procedures and safety requirements. Performs duties of the general lab aide for both the clinical and anatomic laboratories.

Responsibilities
  1. GYN AND NONGYN SPECIMEN PREPARATION: Accessions and prepares all gyn and nongyn specimens, monitors storage and safe disposal of specimens, segregates specimens that may need additional procedures appropriately. Maintains working knowledge of all safety and compliance guidelines.
  2. SECTION MAINTENANCE: Monitors and maintains processing and staining equipment appropriately. Documents activities as required. Maintains Cytology slide files as specified.
  3. AP INFORMATION SYSTEM: Utilizes laboratory database system to accession, print patient reports, and collect necessary QM data. Assists with upgrades, etc as needed.
  4. CLERICAL FUNCTIONS: Maintains cytology patient records. Uses information system to generate patient negative letters and recall notices. Monitors patient notices to assure the correct information is being distributed. Assists the AP clerical staff as needed.
  5. MATERIALS MANAGEMENT FUNCTIONS: Assists general supervisor in monitoring section supply usage. Utilizes supplies in a cost-effective manner and assists section in pursuing cost-saving options as appropriate.
  6. QUALITY ATTRIBUTES: Actively promotes the quality attributes of teamwork, fiscal responsibility, accountability, patient focused care, flexibility, creativity and leadership as required by the Hospital's Mission Statement.
  7. LAB AIDE DUTIES: Interact with entirety of laboratory (anatomic and clinical) in order to fulfill orders, track supplies, manage deliveries and maintain par levels in the stock room
Qualifications

EDUCATION

High School graduate; some college preferred

EXPERIENCE

Prior experience in laboratory environment is preferred

LICENSURE

None required

SPECIAL SKILLS

Organized and detail oriented with understanding of basic technical processes; excellent problem solving in a timely manner. Responds promptly to client needs and requests.

PHYSICAL DEMAND

Processing requires a lot of time standing, occasional bending and lifting; special handling of chemicals utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment.
