Job Description - 2025-2026: ESL Program Anticipated Openings: English as a Second Language K-12: ESL Teacher (2500001X)
Position Summary:
The position provides English as a Second Language instruction to English language learners in kindergarten through 12th grade, enrolled in contracting school districts in and near Allegheny County.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate knowledge of second language acquisition, linguistics, teaching content English to English Language Learners, and sensitivity to cross-cultural aspects of teaching and learning.
- Coordinate, facilitate, and document the screening test and state English language proficiency test to determine ELL student language proficiency levels for informed assessment criteria.
- Maintain a schedule for student instruction and adhere to that schedule, arriving on time for instruction and remaining at each school for the established time period; any variations must be approved by an ESL Administrator.
- Facilitate daily lesson plans that provide sound educational and language development based on the ELP Standards and state academic standards, incorporating formal and authentic assessment into the daily curriculum, recorded in a cumulative grade book.
- Track collaboration with content area teachers through a collaboration log and complete all necessary paperwork by established due dates, including mileage forms and professional development requests.
- Communicate collaboratively with other school personnel to ensure compliance with policies of the student’s building principal or designated representative, participating in planning, decision-making, and conferencing concerning assigned students.
- Provide ESL instruction to assigned Limited English Proficient students to develop English language skills, literacy, and academic language competence, while supporting student integration into their new culture and monitoring progress.
- Communicate with parents/guardians concerning student’s program and progress with sensitivity to language and cultural differences.
- Maintain professional growth through staff development and actively seek effective instructional approaches through best practices in pedagogy.
- Promote proactive communication with ESL Administration and staff, contributing to program effectiveness and development.
Qualifications:
- Valid PA ESL Program Specialist certificate required.
- Valid PA certificate in Elementary K-6 and either English 7-12 or Communications 7-12, or Reading Specialist K-12 required.
- Experience teaching ESL and/or at the elementary or secondary level preferred.
- Excellent organizational skills, initiative, and ability to work with limited supervision.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Self-motivated, independent, cooperative, flexible, creative, and responsible.
- Ability and experience working as a member of a team.
- Skilled in the use of Microsoft Office Suite and willing to experiment with new technologies.
