2025-2026: ESL Program Anticipated Openings: English as a Second Language K-12: ESL Teacher
The position provides English as a Second Language instruction to English language learners in kindergarten through 12th grade, enrolled in contracting school districts in and near Allegheny County.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate knowledge of second language acquisition, linguistics, teaching content English to English Language Learners, and sensitivity to cross-cultural aspects of teaching and learning.
- Coordinate, facilitate, and document the screening test and state English language proficiency test to determine ELL student language proficiency levels and provide informed assessment criteria to the ESL Office for placement into instruction.
- Maintain a schedule for student instruction, arrive on time, and remain at each school for the established time period. Any variations must be approved by an ESL Administrator.
- Facilitate daily lesson plans that promote educational and language development aligned with ELP Standards and state academic standards. Incorporate regular assessments into the curriculum, recorded in a grade book.
- Track collaboration with content area teachers through a collaboration log. Complete all paperwork, including mileage forms, time sheets, teaching schedules, and professional development requests, by due dates.
- Communicate collaboratively with school personnel to ensure policy compliance. Participate in planning, decision-making, and conferences concerning assigned students as part of the instructional team.
- Provide ESL instruction to develop English language skills, address language proficiency, literacy, academic language, and support cultural adjustment, with ongoing assessment and documentation of student progress.
- Communicate with parents/guardians about student progress, considering language and cultural sensitivities.
- Engage in professional growth through staff development and applying best pedagogical practices.
- Promote proactive communication with ESL Administration and staff, contributing to program development and effectiveness.
Qualifications:
- Valid PA ESL Program Specialist certificate.
- Valid PA certificate in Elementary K-6 and either English 7-12 or Communications 7-12, or Reading Specialist K-12.
- Experience teaching ESL and/or at elementary or secondary levels, or teaching English preferred.
- Excellent organizational, initiative, and independent work skills.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Self-motivated, adaptable, cooperative, creative, and responsible.
- Experience working as part of a team.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and open to new technologies.
