Summary
Under direct supervision of the Travel Management Supervisor, provides customer service to patients, visitors and the public through transportation services to and from appointed locations.
Responsibilities
- Operate shuttle buses and/or vans ranging in passenger capacity on various road and climatic conditions a major portion of the year; obey all local and State traffic laws and employer work rules. Provide door-to-door assistance for customers.
- Perform preliminary vehicle inspections before, during, and at the end of shift; report irregularities and damage; maintain accurate vehicle operation logs.
- Maintain route schedules, stop at designated pick-up points, provide passenger information, assist boarding/disembarking; handle fare collection and timely reporting of incidents.
- Provide customer services to patients, visitors, and the public; greet and determine needs; serve as first point-of-contact for directing customers to medical and health-related services.
- Answer questions about hospital organization, providers and locations; provide accurate information and directions for hospital, clinics, programs and services.
- Demonstrate professionalism and a supportive attitude toward customers, families, visitors and staff; communicate effectively and tactfully with diverse ages and abilities.
- Operate wheelchair lift and secure wheelchairs; ensure proper safety procedures.
- Maintain established policies, procedures, safety, infection control standards.
- Maintain equipment handheld radio and cell phone for shuttle tracking.
- Perform routine vehicle maintenance tasks (fueling, fluid checks, tire pressures, etc.).
- Clean the interior and exterior of vehicles; ensure cleanliness before closing for the night.
- Provide suggestions to management to improve quality and operations; report unsafe conditions or incidents to supervisor.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Levels
- Level II Driver: In addition to the above, maintain shuttle supply inventory, assist with training new drivers, assist with route scheduling and coverage planning, and assist lead driver in inspections for cleanliness and maintenance.
- Level III (Lead) Driver: In addition to the above, assist Travel Management leadership with interviewing and training, provide direction to staff, plan routes, coordinate maintenance, and conduct periodic inspections.
Other Information
Knowledge and skills include customer service, safety and quality control standards, privacy rules, basic truck maintenance, lifting techniques, and applicable traffic laws. Skills include operating a large passenger vehicle in all weather, operating an accessible bus lift, effective communication, independent work and teamwork, and prioritization.
Education and Experience
- Minimum Education: High school diploma or GED.
- Minimum Experience (Level I): Two (2) years professional driving experience. Level II: Four (4) years. Level III: Six (6) years. Substitutions may apply for education/training.
- Minimum Certification: Level I requires a valid Alaska Driver’s License with Defensive Driving and Safety Certification; Level II/III require a Class C CDL Passenger Endorsement and Defensive Driving and Safety Certification within 90 days of hire.
Preferred Experience: Ability to speak an Alaska Native language is preferred.
Additional Requirements: Must be at least 23 years old; clean driving record per ANTHC insurance; must sign a release annually for ANTHC to obtain a current driving record.
