Position Overview
The Animation & Game Art Studio Technician plays a key role in supporting the operational and instructional needs of the Animation & Game Art Department. This part-time position focuses on maintaining equipment and lab spaces, assisting students and faculty with technical needs, and ensuring that studio spaces are safe, organized, and functional. Reporting to the Department Chair, the Studio Technician helps create an environment where creativity and learning can flourish.
Key Responsibilities
Equipment & Gear Management
- Oversee the check-out and return process for departmental equipment.
- Ensure gear is complete, clean, functional, and properly stored.
- Report or initiate repairs or replacements as needed.
- Maintain an organized and accessible storage system.
Computer Lab & Software Support
- Maintain and troubleshoot lab workstations in collaboration with IT.
- Install or update software and assist with network and power setup.
- Keep lab spaces clean and well-organized.
Stop-Motion Studio Support
- Manage inventory of tools, gear, and materials for stop-motion animation.
- Assist with the setup and breakdown of shooting stages.
- Monitor equipment and flag items for reorder or repair.
Facilities & Studio Operations
- Support seasonal studio reconfigurations and summer clean-outs.
- Help prepare studio spaces for AG major courses and departmental projects.
Student & Faculty Support
- Provide in-person troubleshooting and assistance during select in-person or hybrid courses.
- Offer one-on-one support to students experiencing technical issues.
Administrative Support
- Assist with departmental purchasing and budget tracking.
- Support planning for events, guest speakers, and field trips.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Animation, Game Art, or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
Experience & Skills
- Familiarity with various animation workflows (2D, 3D, and stop-motion) preferred.
- Proficiency with software such as Maya, Blender, ToonBoom, Unity, and DragonFrame preferred.
- Comfortable with both Apple and PC systems, Adobe Creative Cloud, and Google Workspace.
- Basic knowledge of networking and system administration is a plus.
- Strong troubleshooting and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
What We Offer
This part-time, academic-year, non-exempt position offers ample studio access and contributes to a vibrant arts community in Portland, ME, known for its cultural scene.
Rate: $19.57 per hour
Schedule: Part-Time, 20 hours per week (Academic Year)
