Job summary

The Valdez Animal Shelter is seeking a temporary Shelter Attendant to support animals, volunteers, visitors and the storefront under the direction of the Chief Animal Control Officer.

This non-benefited, part-time position is scheduled for weekends and other shifts as needed, not to exceed 7.5 hours per day, with duties including feeding, cleaning kennels, assisting with adoptions, fee handling, and basic data entry. Weekend coverage is required with training provided.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 16 years old.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work flexible schedule including major holidays.
• Experience working with animals is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Perform animal care duties such as feeding, cleaning kennels, bathing, and basic medical care.
• Oversee visitors and volunteers; provide information to the public.
• Stock and ring up transactions; tend to the pet supply store.
• Enter information about animals into the shelter database; notify staff of medical needs.
• Handle intakes and out-processing of animals with staff coordination.

Job description

The Valdez Animal Shelter is hiring a temporary Shelter Attendant. Under direction of the Chief Animal Control Officer or Animal Control Officer, the temporary animal shelter attendant assists with animals, volunteers, visitors and storefront.

This is a temporary, non-benefited position that will be scheduled to work weekends and other potential shifts - not to exceed 7.5 hours per day.

Minimum qualifications

• Candidates must be at least 16 years of age;
• Have good verbal and written communications skills;
• Flexibility in scheduling;
• Ability to work major holidays occasionally;
• Previous experience working with animals is a plus.

Position is open until filled, review of applications is ongoing.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform animal care duties such as:
  • Preparing food, feeding, and watering;
  • Cleaning and disinfecting animal kennels, rooms, cages, bedding, food bowls, etc.;
  • Bathing animals;
  • Providing medical care for animals;
  • Sweeping and mopping floors;
  • Picking up fecal matter;
  • Showing animals to the public;
  • Walking dogs;
• Overseeing visitors and volunteers;
• Providing information to the public in a friendly manner;
• Collect license, impound, adoption and housing fees;
• Tending to the pet supply store by stocking inventory and ringing up transactions;
• Entering information about animals and other items into the appropriate data base;
• Keeping animal control officer(s), and other staff updated on any need for medical care of the animals;
• Ability to operate the shelter by yourself;
• Performing intakes and initial animal assessment;
• Performing out processing of animals.

Knowledge, skills and other characteristics

• Works well with little supervision;
• Basic computer skills, understanding of Microsoft Word and Excel, mastery of shelter software;
• Cash handling and counting back change;
• Basic knowledge of animal types, breeds, identification and care.
