Job summary

The City of Weslaco seeks an Animal Control Officer to enforce ordinances, capture and impound animals, and investigate cruelty cases. You will accompany court testimony, prepare incident reports, and ensure humane care under supervision.

Responsibilities include community education, animal handling under stress, and coordinating adoptions while meeting licensing and training timelines. Flexibility for after-hours work is required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 1–3 years of experience in animal control or related field.
• Must obtain Basic Animal Control Officer License and Euthanasia Technician License within 1 year.
• Pass pre-employment background check and drug screen.
• Must complete Emergency Management and Incident Command Training within 3 months.
• Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

Responsibilities

• Investigate reports of animal attacks or cruelty.
• Capture and remove stray or abused animals.
• Write reports and maintain files on impoundments and dispositions.
• Contact owners about held pets and outcomes.
• Clean facilities and equipment; maintain kennels and trucks.
• Issue warnings or citations for animal-related offenses.
• Coordinate adoptions of unclaimed animals.
• Educate the public about animal welfare and laws.
• Hold animal clinics as needed.
• Respond to emergencies; oversee team and volunteers.
• Vector Control duties as assigned.
• Perform other related duties as required.
• May require night/weekend work.
