Job Description

The Animal Care Technician functions under minimal guidance/supervision of the Animal Resources Program Facility Manager to perform functions in support of husbandry operations in accordance with federal , state and local regulations, guidelines and policies on the use of laboratory animals. This position may include rotational assignment to various animals and/or support areas. In addition, this position functions as a member of a work team, actively promotes a team-oriented work environment and will be expected to lead and train others in completing daily animal care.

Responsibilities

• Perform animal husbandry duties for rats, mice, other rodents, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and other organisms, complying with all procedures and internal guidelines.
  
• Perform daily animal health observations and communicate health issues to appropriate personnel.
  
• Operate equipment and use supplies according to safety guidelines, perform general housekeeping and adhere to safety procedures.
  
• Maintain exacting hygienic standards and practice clean room technique as instructed per standard operating procedures.
  
• Perform additional responsibilities as delegated to support the operations of the department.
  
• Must be willing to work some holidays and one weekend day/week, as well as occasional overtime hours.
  

The entry level position is ideal for those interested in careers in laboratory animal research or veterinary medicine. The position involves professional development opportunities in mastering the care and husbandry of a variety of animal species. Regular work schedule is Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30 pm but could potentially be modified.

Required Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Associates degree in Animal Husbandry, Biology and related field.
  
• Minimum of one year of relevant previous experience in an animal care facility, a veterinary facility, a clinical setting or research setting.
  
• Proficiency with basic technical procedures, knowledge of clean room techniques or willingness and ability to learn them quickly.
  
• Strong computer skills including proficiency with Google Suite, Microsoft Word Office suite and ability to learn additional technical systems.
  
• Must have strong organizational and communication skills, focus and attention to detail and ability to follow exacting written and verbal instructions.
  
• Ability to consistently apply mandatory compliance policies and procedures.
  
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  
• Ability to undertake physical work, repetitive motion and to regularly move, position, place, push and pull up to and including 50 pounds.
  

Preferred knowledge, skills and abilities

• Bachelor's degree in Animal Husbandry, Biology or related field.
  

Hourly rate: $19.97
