Are you passionate about animal welfare and ready to serve your community in a meaningful way? The Corona Police Department is seeking a dedicated Full-Time Animal Care Technician to join our Animal Services team. In this vital role, you’ll be on the front lines of animal care—providing shelter, and support to animals in need while assisting with community outreach and enforcement of animal-related laws. The Corona Police Department is made up of 250 employees including officers and professional staff. The department is comprised of three divisions: Field Services, Investigative Services, and Support Services. Our mission is to ensure the safety and security of our community while maintaining trust through transparency.

Skills

The Animal Care Technician performs routine animal control duties in support of the Police Department’s Support Services Division. This includes responding to calls and complaints from citizens for animal services. The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Knowledge & Education

  • Completion of the twelfth grade (12th) or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of handling, collecting, impounding, and registering a variety of wild and domestic animals in various conditions.
  • Familiar with different breeds of dogs, cats, and other domestic animals.
  • Methods and techniques of investigating a diverse range of animal control problems and issues.
  • Knowledge of principles of recordkeeping and reporting.

Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to effectively respond to calls for services.
  • Recognize normal and abnormal animal behavior and act accordingly.
  • Handle potentially dangerous animals in a safe manner.
  • Identify dogs, cats and other domestic animals and their characteristics.
  • Medicate or euthanize animals, after completion of the appropriate training.
  • Prepare, maintain, and update accurate and detailed documentation of inspection findings and other written materials, records, logs, and reports.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of animal control equipment.
  • Maintain accurate records and files of work performed.
  • Respond to after-hours emergency calls, as directed.

Experience

  • One (1) year of experience in the care and handling of animals or related experience is desired.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License (Class C), to be maintained throughout employment.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid Euthanasia by Injection Certification within one (1 ) year of employment (to be maintained throughout employment).

Candidates that possess the following are highly desirable but not required:

  • Possession of a valid Chemical Immobilization Certification, to be maintained throughout employment.
  • Possession of a P.C. 832 Certification in the use of firearms, search and seizure, and arrest practices.

This position is FLSA Non-Exempt eligible for overtime compensation.

Application Process

Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis until a sufficient number of qualified applicants have been received. The deadline to apply is Sunday, July 13, 2025, at 5PM. Candidates that successfully pass the screening process will be invited for an in-person oral interview tentatively scheduled for July 22, 2025. Those who pass the oral interviews will be placed on an eligibility list and will be contacted by the department to start the background process as vacancies arise.

The Selected Candidate Will Undergo a Thorough Background Investigation And Medical Exam With The Corona Police Department. Background Investigation Will Include But Is Not Limited To The Following

  • No felony conviction(s).
  • Submit to a fingerprint and criminal history check - State and Federal Bureaus.
  • Good moral character as determined by a thorough background investigation.
  • United States high school graduate, GED, or equivalent.
  • No conviction(s) of a serious offense, or numerous convictions of minor offenses.
  • Submit to a polygraph examination.
  • Successfully pass a medical examination.
  • Credit history check, if established, must be satisfactory.

THE ORGANIZATION

The City of Corona is a General Law city operating under a Council-Manager form of government. Policymaking and legislative authority is vested in the City Council, consisting of a Mayor and four Council Members. Members of the City Council are elected by District to a four-year term. The Mayor is selected by the Council and serves as the presiding officer for one year.

The City is organized into the following departments/organizational units: Community Services, City Manager’s Office, Economic Development, Finance, Fire, Human Resources, Information Technology, Legal and Risk Management, Police, Planning & Development, Public Works and Utilities. Oversight of these departments is divided between the City Manager and two Assistant City Managers.

The City's total operating budget for Fiscal Year 2025 is $ 399.1 million with a General Fund operating budget of $ 209.6 million. Corona enjoys a workforce of 922 dedicated employees who provide high quality services to its residents and visitors each day.
