Position Overview

The Operations Leader - Animal Care promotes and ensures the efficient and effective operations of the Companion Animal Department and drives the sales of aquatic pets, reptiles, birds, and small companion animals. This role involves coaching and mentoring all Pet Care Center partners to support and enhance the guest experience and animal care. The Operations Leader - Animal Care is responsible for training, developing, supporting scheduling, and leading a high-performing team that meets the department's sales, gross margin, and animal and merchandise shrink targets. They also assist in managing all aspects of the Pet Care Center's business according to Petco standards and safety procedures.

Position Responsibilities
  • Utilize business acumen to analyze business trends and implement improvement plans.
  • Ensure the health and well-being of live animals following Petco standards, including health checks and wellness documentation.
  • Adhere to Veterinary Protocols for all sick animals.
  • Process transactions efficiently to enhance guest experience.
  • Implement and execute Companion Animal Operations and Aquatics through training and coaching.
  • Order live animals to maximize sales, margin, and inventory; analyze inventory data for improvements.
  • Maintain operational standards and animal-related maintenance tasks.
  • Achieve presentation standards in aquatics and companion animal areas.
  • Partner with merchandising to ensure proper stock levels.
  • Handle and document all adoption animals properly.
  • Monitor sales and margin reports to inform decisions.
  • Lead, coach, and provide feedback to team members to ensure quality service.
  • Manage partner scheduling to meet in-stock and guest service goals during peak hours.
  • Apply talent management skills in recruiting, hiring, training, and succession planning.
  • Deliver quick and courteous service to guests, sharing product knowledge and suggesting appropriate merchandise.
Other Essential Duties

  • Promote safety and ensure compliance with safety standards and policies.
  • Foster a collaborative culture that encourages ideas and efficiency improvements.
  • Prioritize talent development to ensure a strong team capable of executing company plans.
  • Represent Petco's brand and lead with high standards, fostering a fun and high-quality work environment.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent; some college preferred.
  • 1+ years of management experience required; 2+ years preferred.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Proficiency in communication, organizational, and computer skills (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong guest service, problem-solving, and people development skills.
Supervisory Responsibility
  • Supervise Operations Specialists & Senior Aquatics Specialists.
  • Support Pet Care Center operations as Leader on Duty.
Work Environment

This role requires support during key hours, including weekends, with most duties indoors. Some physical activity such as bending, kneeling, lifting up to 50 pounds, and standing for long periods is involved. Occasional travel may be required.
