Job summary

Red Door Animal Shelter in Chicago is seeking a full-time Animal Care Steward responsible for the daily care of various shelter animals, maintaining cleanliness, and following policies set by management.

This role includes feeding, cleaning, and administering medications to animals, as well as providing tours and answering visitor questions. Benefits include health/dental insurance, paid holidays, vacations, and sick leave.

Qualifications

• Insured car and valid driver's license required.
• Prior experience working with animals in a professional setting.
• Ability to work with the public.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs.
• Live within reasonable driving distance.

Responsibilities

• Clean animal areas including bedding, food/water bowls, and litter boxes.
• Feed the animals and administer medications.
• Drive animals to and from vet appointments.
• Unload and organize food and supply deliveries.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of the shelter.

We are a no‑kill, cageless, multi‑species shelter caring for cats, rabbits, chickens, and ducks. Dogs are housed in foster homes.

Job Description

An Animal Care Steward is responsible for the day‑to‑day care of shelter animals and cleanliness of the facility according to policies set by the manager and Board of Directors.

• Clean animal areas (bedding, food/water bowls, litter boxes)
• Feed animals
• Administer medications
• Drive animals to and from vet appointments
• Unload and organize food and supply deliveries
• Laundry
• Keep the shelter clean and organized
• Communicate questions and concerns to shelter management
• Provide guided tours to the public
• Answer questions from visitors and adopters
• Past experience with rabbits or other small, exotic mammals is a plus

This is a full‑time, paid position eligible for Health/Dental Benefits; Paid Holidays, Vacations, and Sick Leave; Casual Dress.
