Qualifications

Job description

Job Title: Animal Services Technician

Performs intermediate technical work providing a hospital experience for customers and staff at Onslow County Animal Services, including animal care and program implementation to facilitate live outcomes for housed animals. Work is performed under close supervision of the Shelter Manager.

  1. Provide customer service by answering phone inquiries, assisting shelter visitors, and responding to electronic communications, while facilitating community resource utilization.
  2. Receive incoming animals, examine for behavior, diseases, injuries, and adoptability; administer routine vaccinations and medical care; record information in the database.
  3. Conduct adoptions, handle financial transactions, and balance the cash drawer.
  4. Assist with community outreach programs including foster care, volunteers, rescues, and responsible pet ownership education.
  5. Care for animals including feeding, watering, cleaning enclosures, monitoring behavior, and enrichment activities.
  6. Clean common areas such as offices, reception, and restrooms.
  7. Maintain inventory of supplies.
  8. Perform humane euthanasia when necessary.
  9. Prepare and ship specimens for laboratory examination.
  10. Participate as a Disaster Ready Team (DRT) member if appointed or volunteering.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of animal care laws and safety procedures; customer service, computer operation, recordkeeping, and program implementation skills; ability to establish effective relationships, communicate professionally, and operate office equipment.

Physical Requirements: Ability to exert up to 10 pounds regularly, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 100 pounds occasionally. Work involves standing, walking, speaking, hearing, handling, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, and repetitive motions. Work may be in wet, humid, cold, hot, noisy, or outdoor environments, with exposure to chemicals, bloodborne pathogens, and other hazards. Must wear protective equipment as needed.

Qualifications: High school diploma or GED with coursework in business or animal science, and moderate animal-related or customer service experience; Associate degree preferred. Must obtain certified rabies vaccinator and euthanasia technician certifications within six months. Valid driver’s license required.

Salary: Based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.
