Job description

Overview

This faculty position is within the Department of Anesthesiology, reporting directly to the Vice Chairman or designee. The incumbent will be an expert in translational development of Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) based therapeutics for treating serious chronic neurological disorders, with a preference for experience in nonopioid chronic pain therapeutics. The position is open at the assistant, associate or full professor level and will be appointed based on training and experience. The Division of Translational Research is engaged in interdisciplinary bench-to-bedside programs with substantial NIH support.

Responsibilities

• Develop competitive research projects and design and submit timely, research‑oriented grants and contracts to funding agencies.
• Build and sustain extramural research funding, achieving substantial support for independent projects within three years.
• Communicate effectively in writing and spoken English.
• Represent the department at international, national, state and local meetings and deliver professional presentations to students, colleagues, support groups and community groups.
• Publish research findings in top refereed journals, book chapters, and books.
• Assist other investigators in career development and in obtaining research funding within the department and from other disciplines.
• Develop and teach relevant courses in the Department of Anesthesiology as assigned by the Chair or designee.
• Participate in the development and mentoring of residents, fellows, students and faculty in the capacity of advisor.
• Participate in external, institutional and departmental committees.
• Engage in team science and interactions with multiple departments and institutions; train and support technicians, students, fellows and faculty.

Qualifications

• Hold a PhD, MD, DVM or equivalent, and at least 3+ years of relevant professional experience.
• Broad training in HSV gene therapy, microbiology, physiology, pharmacology, molecular biology, and animal models of human disease.
• Demonstrated ability to develop competitive research projects and to design and submit competitive grants and contracts.
• Experience in or ability to engage in team science, interdisciplinary collaboration, and mentorship.
