SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Anesthesia Clinical Assistant will report to the Nurse Manager of Perioperative Services and Director of Surgical Services and is an integral member of the anesthesia patient care team. The Anesthesia Clinical Assistant provides support and receives directives from the licensed Anesthesia provider in clinical settings. The Anesthesia Clinical Assistant will provide support for routine cases involving the Anesthesia Department by assisting in the preparation and maintenance of anesthesia equipment and anesthesia delivery systems before and during anesthesia. The Anesthesia Clinical Assistant lends clinical support during preoperative and interoperative procedures. The Anesthesia Clinical Assistant performs first level maintenance on anesthesia equipment and cleans, sterilizes, disinfects, stocks, orders, and maintains the routine anesthesia equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

EXPERIENCE:

A minimum of two (2) years experience as a perioperative assistant, Anesthesia Clinical Assistant or equivalent experience.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  1. Must be able to recognize and establish priorities and be attentive to details.
  2. Must possess a strong work ethic.
  3. Follows detailed written and oral instruction.
  4. Requires basic reading, writing and simple arithmetic skills.
  5. May operate basic equipment and machinery.

Problem Solving/Decision Making:

Demonstrates the ability to follow established and approved hospital policies and procedures. Makes decisions based on detailed procedures; technical aids generally available. Has clear cut alternatives available and usually follows a specific course of action.

Scope of Impact/Accountability:

Impact focused in immediate work area but may also affect closely related activities in other work units. Influence is indirect and supportive in nature. Accountability is restricted to activities based on established routines and responsibilities as well as those assigned by others.

Interpersonal Communication:

Demonstrates a broad range of communication skills and organizational abilities. Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills.

PRINCIPAL JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  1. Maintains and organizes the anesthesia environment, equipment and supplies to facilitate department function in all anesthetizing areas.
  2. Must have thorough knowledge of the set-up, operation and troubleshooting of anesthesia machines, monitors and ancillary equipment.
  3. Responsible to assist with acquisition of all equipment/supplies for anesthesia cases.
  4. Will be knowledgeable of various aseptic techniques used for routine cleaning, disinfecting, sterilizing and storing of all reusable equipment and supplies.
  5. Maintains, inspects, and replaces as necessary a safe and secure sharps disposal system.
  6. Maintains cleanliness of equipment cleaning area.
  7. Maintains supply stock in workrooms and anesthesia workstations in rotational fashion.
  8. Maintains the sterilization of carbon dioxide absorbers as scheduled.
  9. Recognizes and adheres to universal precautions and principles of aseptic technique in all clinical activities.
  10. Handles equipment and items correctly to ensure ever-present availability and safety of supplies and materials.
  11. Assists with inventory, orders, and maintains departmental supply stock consistent with departmental demand in collaboration with the Manager of Chain Supply or designee.
  12. Provides perioperative technical support to anesthesia professional staff for delivery of patient care.
  13. Reports anesthesia equipment in need of repair to supervisor and/or BMET.
  14. Maintains availability of necessary equipment in each operating room.
  15. Makes available, assembles, and assists with the operation of specialized equipment such as humidification units, fiberoptic endoscopic equipment, and rapid infusion devices.
  16. Demonstrates speed and timeliness in all duties, particularly preparation for emergencies and trauma procedures. Performs under extreme pressure of life-threatening emergencies. Is calm and competent and makes recommendations to improve support.
  17. Assists anesthesia professional staff as required, including:
    1. Set ups for OR cases which include preparation of laryngoscope and intubation equipment.
    2. Preparation and labeling of blank syringes.
    3. IV bag and tubing set-up and set up of IV warming devices.
    4. Assistance during procedures such as peripheral nerve block, insertion of invasive lines as directed.
    5. Preparation, positioning and draping of the patient for invasive monitoring/procedure.
    6. Anticipates needs of Anesthesiology including invasive monitor insertion and procedures such as pulmonary artery catheter, central venous access, fiberoptic intubation and/or difficult airway situations.
