Life Fitness / Hammer Strength is seeking an Android Software Engineering Intern for 2027. You will assist in design, development, and testing of embedded Android software for next-generation fitness equipment, delivering high-quality user experiences.

This hybrid internship in the Chicagoland area lets you work with mentors, participate in code reviews, and collaborate with cross-functional teams on a 12-week case study presented to senior leaders.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a full-time bachelor’s or master’s degree with expected graduation in 2028 or 2029.
• Strong academic standing with GPA 3.5+ preferred.
• Fundamental understanding of object-oriented programming and software design principles.

Responsibilities

• Assist in developing Android software components and new features.

About the Role

The Life Fitness / Hammer Strength Internship Program 2027 is designed to provide meaningful, hands‑on experience that supports both professional development and business impact. Successful interns will be assigned challenging projects aligned with their academic background and work closely with experienced mentors to develop technical and professional skills. As an Android Software Engineering Intern, you will assist in the design, development, and testing of embedded Android software for next‑generation fitness equipment while helping deliver engaging, high‑quality user experiences.

As Our Android Software Engineering Intern, You Will

• Assist in developing Android software components and new features under the guidance of experienced software engineers.
• Support the integration, configuration, and testing of software on embedded hardware platforms.
• Participate in code reviews, debugging sessions, and software validation activities.
• Contribute to the documentation of software architecture, implementation details, and testing procedures.
• Assist in diagnosing and resolving software defects related to performance, connectivity, stability, and user interaction.
• Support the continuous improvement of software development processes, tools, and best practices.
• Collaborate with Software Quality Assurance teams to verify feature functionality, quality, and reliability.
• Contribute to a high‑impact, business‑critical project that supports product innovation and customer value.
• Work with cross‑functional engineering teams to develop and enhance connected fitness experiences.
• Collaborate with fellow interns on a 12‑week cross‑functional case study project and present recommendations to senior leaders, stakeholders, and managers.
• Attend team meetings, development reviews, and project discussions to gain exposure to the full software development lifecycle.

What Life Fitness / Hammer Strength is looking for in our Android Software Engineering Intern:

• Must be local to the Chicagoland area and available to participate in the hybrid internship program.
• Currently enrolled in a full‑time bachelor's or master's degree program with an expected graduation date in 2028 or 2029.
• Pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
• Strong academic standing preferred, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5.
• Fundamental understanding of object‑oriented programming concepts and software design principles.
• Basic knowledge of Android development using Java and/or Kotlin; strong Java development experience may substitute for direct Android experience.
• Familiarity with Linux‑based operating environments.
• Demonstrated initiative, positive attitude, and eagerness to learn new technologies and development processes.
• Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem‑solving skills.
• Ability to adapt to changing priorities and thrive in a fast‑paced environment.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Exposure to software development projects, mobile applications, embedded systems, or related coursework is a plus.

At Life Fitness / Hammer Strength, we believe in taking care of our team with a comprehensive total rewards package that includes competitive pay and a range of valuable benefits. The base wage range for this position, intended for U.S. applicants, is $24.00 - $27.00 per hour and includes eligibility for overtime. The actual base pay will vary based on applicant’s education, experience, skills, and abilities. The range reflected is based on a primary work location of Rosemont, IL and the actual salary may vary for applicants in a different geographic location.

Life Fitness / Hammer Strength provides a valuable and enriching experience for interns. Depending on the length and timing of their internship, interns may qualify for paid holidays during their assignment. They are also eligible for paid sick leave as outlined by state and local laws.
