About the role

As an Android Software Engineer, you will own the Android client experience and be responsible for how AI feels, behaves and performs on mobile devices.

This is not a traditional mobile role focused solely on UI implementation. You'll build and scale a production Android application where AI is central to the user experience, creating intuitive interactions that handle real-world complexity while maintaining performance, reliability and usability.

Working closely with backend, product and AI teams, you'll help define how users interact with conversational AI, recommendations, voice features and intelligent workflows on mobile.

What you'll do

• Design, develop and maintain production Android applications using Kotlin.
• Build AI-powered mobile experiences including conversational interfaces, voice features, recommendations and intelligent workflows.
• Integrate large language model (LLM), vision and speech capabilities through backend APIs.
• Design user experiences for AI-driven interactions including:
  • Streaming responses
  • Partial results
  • Retry mechanisms
  • Latency handling
  • Error recovery
• Optimise application performance, responsiveness and resource usage across AI-heavy workflows.
• Implement analytics, monitoring and user feedback systems to support product and AI improvements.
• Collaborate closely with backend and machine learning engineers on API design and system behaviour.
• Ensure application stability, security and scalability in production environments.
• Diagnose and resolve performance bottlenecks, reliability issues and production incidents.
• Help define best practices for building AI-native mobile experiences.

What we're looking for

Experience

• 3+ years of professional Android development experience.
• Strong commercial experience building applications with Kotlin.
• Experience shipping and maintaining production mobile applications.
• Published applications on the Google Play Store.
• Experience working in fast-moving product-focused environments.

Technical skills

• Strong Kotlin and Android development expertise.
• Experience integrating AI services such as:
  • LLM APIs
  • Vision APIs
  • Speech recognition services
  • AI-powered recommendations
• Strong understanding of Coroutines and Flow.
• Experience consuming REST and/or gRPC APIs.
• Knowledge of SQL and NoSQL data storage approaches.
• Strong debugging, profiling and optimisation skills.
• Understanding of mobile application security and reliability.

Nice to have

• Experience with ML Kit.
• Familiarity with TensorFlow Lite and on-device inference.
• Experience designing AI interaction patterns and conversational UX.
• Knowledge of handling non-deterministic AI behaviour in production.
• Experience working with latency-sensitive applications.
• Background building productivity, communication or workflow products.
