Remote work in a distributed team

Job summary

Speechify is seeking a Team Lead for Android to own core product work and raise how the team works around it. This is a hands‑on leadership role in a 100% distributed setting, focused on Kotlin, MVVM, Jetpack, and UI/UX excellence.

You'll write code, review PRs, and guide features from conception to release while mentoring engineers and delivering reliable nightly builds for QA. Strong communication and product sense are essential.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software engineering experience, including time leading a team or owning a major surface while staying hands‑on.
• Experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long‑running background work.
• Understanding of tests and how to write them, including limits of test coverage.
• An ability to introduce a lasting, impactful process or practice to a team and explain its cost.
• Comfort with changing how teams work and handling related friction.
• A track record of building things the rest of the team actually uses.
• Ability to describe how your team works with AI agents, not just personal work.
• Product design intuition, user empathy, and pushing Android UI/UX beyond the specs.
• Self‑drive to improve the app and codebase beyond what's outlined in the spec.
• Excellent communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Own major features end to end, working closely with our design team — from the decision through to release. This is real delivery, not oversight
• Own, maintain, and improve reliability metrics for key features
• Review pull requests and give constructive feedback
• Unblock the team: notice when someone has been stuck and act
• Recognize when a component should become the team standard and drive that change
• Keep shared components clean, tested, and easy to pick up
• Lead process changes when needed rather than waiting for them to occur
• Reduce manual steps to release reliably
• Address recurring issues by changing underlying setups
• Shift verification left with automated checks before QA
• Plan sprints so focus stays on decisions
• Assess review requirements and sign-off thresholds
• Participate in cross‑functional discussions early with Product, Design, and Engineering
• Handle critical issues, own feature releases, and provide nightly builds for QA
• Mentor early‑career engineers to grow and learn
