Job summary

Speechify is seeking a hands-on Team Lead for Android to own core product work, write code, review code, and drive features end to end. You will combine leadership with technical excellence to ship reliable, scalable Android experiences.

In this role you will mentor engineers, collaborate with product and design, and push UI/UX beyond the spec while maintaining a strong focus on quality and release readiness. This is a US-based position with competitive compensation.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software engineering experience, including time leading a team or owning a major surface while staying hands‑on.
• Proficiency in Kotlin and related Android tech (Kotlin Coroutines, Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, JUnit tests).
• Experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work.
• Understanding of tests and how to write them, and what can't be covered by them.
• Something you introduced to a team that stuck after you stopped pushing it, and what it cost to get there.
• Comfort with asking people to change how they work and dealing with friction.
• A view on heavy vs light review needs based on system behavior.
• Track record of building things actually used by the team.
• Ability to describe how your team works with AI agents.
• Product design intuition, user empathy, and pushing Android UI/UX beyond the spec.
• Self‑drive to improve the app and codebase beyond the spec.
• Excellent communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Own major features end to end, from decision through to release.
• Own, maintain, and improve reliability metrics for key features.
• Review pull requests and provide constructive feedback.
• Unblock the team when blockers arise and ensure progress.
• Ensure shared pieces are maintained and versioned.
• Shift verification left and automate checks for nightly builds.
• Run planning to focus on unresolved decisions and risks.
• Coordinate with Product, Design, and Engineering early.
• Handle critical issues and provide nightly builds for QA.
• Mentor and grow early-career engineers.
