Job summary

Kansas Health Science University is seeking Teaching Assistants for the Anatomy department. TAs will support student learning by overseeing open laboratory opportunities outside scheduled class times and by training with faculty.

Responsibilities include modeling professionalism, maintaining specimens, reviewing course materials, and aiding students with equipment and study techniques. This is a part-time, on-site student position with potential professional development benefits.

Job Description

The Teaching Assistants (TA) for the Department are student positions that support student learning by managing open laboratory opportunities outside of scheduled class times. Students will work with faculty for training, as well as be available outside of typical laboratory sessions to provide added time for student review.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Exemplify (or ‘model’) professionalism by demonstrating punctuality, reliability, and timely, courteous email communications
  • Create a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students’ diverse cultures, language skills, and experience
  • Maintain the quality and accessibility of plastinated specimens, ensuring students follow all rules and regulations regarding usage. At minimum, this includes no touching by peer students and no photos, as well as ensuring the plastinates are returned to the appropriate cabinets and locked after the open lab session ends.
  • Review the lecture and laboratory materials for the OMSI and OMSII MEDE courses in preparation for open laboratory sessions led by TAs
  • Recognize and utilize study techniques within the different learning styles and student preferences
  • Encourage independent learning among peer students, such as organizing students into group work, searching within Anatomy atlases for correct answers, and emphasizing self‑assessment ahead of written and/or practical exams
  • Utilize feedback and reflection to improve practice
  • Provide direct assistance in the use of equipment, learning objects, and materials needed for student success
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be an OMSII student
  • Student must be in good standing and passing all classes

  • Excellent written and verbal communication and comprehension skills.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality of privileged information.
  • Good organizational skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage professional and interpersonal relationships and interact effectively with diverse members of the institutional community and outside constituencies.
