Job summary

Labcorp is seeking a veterinary pathologist to perform complex microscopic evaluation of tissue sections from laboratory animal studies, supervise necropsies and provide scientific guidance to histology staff.

The role requires a DVM/VMD with ACVP board certification and 3+ years in pathology; experience with toxicologic pathology and data systems (Xybion/Instem/APLIS) is preferred. Relocation assistance available and a comprehensive benefits package.

Work Schedule

Work Schedule: 1st shift Monday through Friday and after hours and weekend work as defined by the duty rotational roster.

Job Responsibilities

• Perform the complex microscopic evaluation and interpretation of tissue sections from animals exposed to test materials and correlate these findings with necropsy, organ weight and clinical pathology findings.
• Author comprehensive pathology narrative reports of microscopic, gross, and clinical pathology findings, while meeting report deadlines.
• Supervise necropsies and provide scientific guidance to necropsy technicians to ensure accuracy and compliance with protocols and SOP’s.
• Communicate the significance of pathologic findings to study directors, clients and other individuals.
• Participate in histopathology consultations and peer reviews with other pathologists.
• Attend pre-initiation and/or pre-necropsy meetings.
• Perform internal peer reviews of in-house toxicology reports that include interpretations of Anatomic Pathology data.
• Take photomicrographs of tissues/lesions as directed by protocol or client request for inclusion in reports, consultations and/or submission to regulatory agencies.
• Provide diagnostic support to the Department of Laboratory Animal Medicine in their disease surveillance programs.
• Participate in process improvement projects.
• Attend scientific meetings and continuing education seminars.
• Author scientific manuscripts and give presentations.

Minimum Qualifications

• Minimum Qualifications: DVM, VMD degree or other Veterinary degree Board certified by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists 3 or more years of experience in pathology residency

Preferred Qualifications

• PhD DABT certification 1 or more years of experience with toxicologic pathology
• 1 or more years of experience with pathology data systems (Xybion, Instem, or APLIS)

Additional job standards

• Ability to evaluate tissue sections from animals, including the interpretation of histomorphologic findings for each tissue of every animal, as well as selected special stains and procedures.
• Ability to formulate pathology tables by direct entry of all histomorphologic findings into a computerized data collection system.
• Ability to conduct necropsies and recognize, describe and interpret findings at necropsy.
• Ability to provide scientific guidance and feedback to histology technicians to correct artifacts and prevent reoccurrence of technical problems, and to ensure accuracy and compliance with protocols, SOP’s and client expectations of quality histotechnology.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills.
• Ability for exposure to formalin and other chemicals used in the necropsy room or histology laboratory.
• Ability to occasionally use respirator and protective clothing
• Ability to sit at a microscope for extended periods of time.
• Ability to stand for extended periods of time for necropsy supervision.
