Job Description

Job Title: Scientist II

Duration: 12 months

Location: St. Paul, MN 55117

Working Hours: 40 hours/week

Shift Schedule: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm

Job Summary:

The scientist will perform device extractions following protocols, along with non-volatile residue analysis, FTIR, and ICP/MS analysis. They will support the liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) and/or gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) teams. Working under the guidance of senior chemists, the role involves supporting Extractable and Leachable (E&L) analysis and possibly method development for the Science and Technology analytical chemistry lab located at Little Canada, Woodridge.

The position includes sample preparation and operation of E&L analytical equipment. It functions as part of an analytical chemistry team, adhering to ISO10993, GDP, and GLP standards in the medical device industry.

Essential Functions:
  • Perform bench chemistry testing supporting the E&L team following SOPs and requirements.
  • Support E&L analysis using FT-IR, ICP, IC, GC/MS, and LC/MS in a high-throughput environment.
  • Follow test methods and protocols to execute E&L testing.
  • Document, analyze, and report results using LabVantage Electronic Notebook.
  • Maintain laboratory cleanliness and organize chemical inventory.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members.
  • Expand knowledge of analytical techniques and troubleshooting.
  • Assist senior scientists with method development, validation, and investigational analysis as needed.
  • Adhere to Abbott Quality Policy and SOPs.
Accountability/Supervision:
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to apply chemistry education and experience in a fast-paced lab.
  • Perform mathematical and statistical computations in Excel.
  • Work under supervision and prioritize tasks accordingly.
  • Willingness to perform repetitive lab work.
Working Conditions:

Lab environment with safety equipment, handling chemicals and medical devices, sitting/standing as needed.

Physical Demands:

Sitting, standing, lifting, carrying, etc.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment with changing priorities.
  • Capability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or related field with 1-5 years of experience.
  • Experience with routine laboratory work and analytical instrumentation.
  • Experience documenting work per GMP guidelines.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, especially Excel, and data analysis.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Hands-on experience executing protocols and bench experiments.
  • Familiarity with analytical equipment such as FT-IR, HPLC, GC, ICP, and ion chromatography.
  • Experience with method validation and E&L studies.
