An established industry player in public health is seeking a Research Scientist II in Chemical Sciences. The Center for Laboratory Sciences (CLS), based on the Richmond Campus, employs over 1,200 people and is situated on a 29-acre property in Richmond's Marina Bay. CLS aims to protect and promote health through innovative infectious disease and environmental testing, surveillance, and investigation activities, fostering coordination and leadership across public health laboratories at various levels. The Center emphasizes continuous improvement, quality, and performance management.
The Drinking Water & Radiation Laboratory (DWRL) comprises two sections: Microbiology & Biomonitoring and Chemistry & Radiochemistry. Staffed by approximately 35 professionals, DWRL conducts studies, provides scientific expertise, and offers laboratory services, including environmental radiation measurements, marine biotoxin testing, chemical contaminant research, and toxicology testing. It also monitors wastewater for pathogens and is located in a state-of-the-art facility near San Francisco Bay.
Candidates with a Master’s Degree will receive a 2% pay differential, while those with a Doctoral Degree will receive 3%. Individuals with both degrees are eligible for the higher differential.
This role supports CLS’s mission by leveraging technology to improve laboratory services, ensuring regulatory quality, and advancing public health measures, aligning with CDPH’s mission to enhance health and well-being across California.
The Research Scientist II (Chemical Sciences) (RS II (CS)) plans, organizes, and leads complex research studies, implements high-level clinical tests, and develops methods for analyzing toxic residues in clinical and environmental samples. The role requires availability for 24/7 work, with 5% travel for conferences and training. The laboratory complies with CLIA standards, and while a clinical laboratory scientist license is desirable, it is not required initially; however, the incumbent must work towards obtaining one.

Desirable Qualifications
Experience in organic/inorganic analysis using advanced techniques (LC/MS, GC/MS, ICP-MS), excellent communication skills, and a current or in-progress California clinical laboratory scientist license are preferred.
