Job summary

Position Summary

Position plays a vital role in keeping Dallas College’s proprietary and sensitive information secure. Responsible for monitoring one or more of the college’s computer information systems, networks, or cloud-based platforms for security issues and identifying/correcting flaws while identifying specific areas for improvement in the College’s security posture.

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • A demonstrated ability to read and understand information security laws and regulations combined with technical experience in information technology is needed.
  • Ability to perform structured testing of networks, computers, applications, and other IT systems to detect exploitable vulnerabilities.
  • Must be able to continually adapt to stay up to date on IT security and the latest methods attackers are using to infiltrate computer systems.
  • Ability to analyze relevant cyber security data and other information sources for suspicious network traffic, attack indicators and potential security breaches; produce reports, and assist in coordination efforts during incidents.
  • Requires a high degree of diplomacy, customer service, accountability, and the ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to act ethically and independently during investigations, while maintaining strict confidentiality and compliance with Dallas College policies, local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Ability to collaborate within a broad range of internal/external stakeholders and constituents to assist with defining technical approaches and roadmaps for products and service standards that impact the district’s security.
  • Assist with the development of design controls and service alternatives that improve the district defenses against cyber-attacks.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and Adobe Acrobat for creating and maintaining documentation, reports and fillable forms.
  • Working knowledge of anti-virus software and a conceptual understanding of firewall, security information and event management (SIEM), intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS).
  • Ability to identify potential impact to customers through the analysis of forensic reports and the examination of malware, to determine associated indicators of compromise.
  • Able to distribute countermeasures to detect and prevent identified threats.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to provide clear and concise communication effectively via various media including presentations, oral, and written communication.
  • Must be able to interact effectively with individuals within the Dallas College community network.
  • Requires excellent time management, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to adapt to changing work environments, work priorities, and organizational needs to meet business objectives.
  • Must have excellent customer service skills.
  • Must have the ability to maintain the security and integrity of the critical infrastructure of Dallas College.
Key Responsibilities
  • Responsible for security and analysis in support of Dallas College’s information privacy and cyber security program, information services, and supporting systems.
  • Operates various security applications and tools while adhering to strict guidelines and procedures to respond to and mitigate security events that compromise the integrity, confidentiality, or availability of Dallas College information assets.
  • Protect digital files and information systems against unauthorized access, modification, or destruction.
  • Monitors computer networks and cloud infrastructure for security breaches and other cyber security incidents.
  • Investigates threats and vulnerability alerts to determine current impact and coordinate remediation actions, as necessary.
  • Attends meetings and provides consultation on cyber security issues and concerns.
  • Research emerging information security technologies to determine which solutions provide the most effective protection to the organization.
  • Mitigates the impact of cyber‑attacks by developing, distributing, and sharing countermeasures that may impact networks and information systems.
  • Exercises judgment within broadly defined cyber security practices and policies.
  • Selects methods, techniques, and evaluation criterion for obtaining desired results and increased productivity.
  • Completes required Dallas College Professional Development training hours per academic year.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a significant, meaningful, and relevant field; or 4+ years of substantial experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Associate’s degree in computer science or cyber security with 2-3 years of relevant experience in computer safety and security, or significant and meaningful equivalent work.
Preferred Education And Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree and/or 1-4+ years of cyber security experience.
  • Preferred certifications to obtain (not required):
    • Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)
    • Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA)
    • Center of Digital Forensics Academic Excellence (CDFAE)

Basic programming skills in multiple languages are a plus.

  • Due to the nature of cyber security, this position may require working outside normal business hours and being on call to respond to security incidents as they occur.
  • Official transcripts are required.
  • May require a current and valid driver’s license if travelling on behalf of Dallas College.
  • Bilingual or multilingual preferred.
