Job summary

FirstEnergy, headquartered in Akron, Ohio, seeks an experienced Accounting Policy and Controls professional to join the Controller’s department on an onsite basis. You will support monthly closes, journal entries, and policy development for Energy Delivery operations, interfacing with multiple accounting teams and system integrations.

The role emphasizes ensuring internal controls, regulatory reporting, and data analysis, with opportunities to lead pre-unitization controls and audit support

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related discipline is required. Advanced degree a plus.
• Minimum 7 years’ related work experience is required.
• Relevant work experience includes knowledge of financial acumen, understanding of SAP and FERC uniform system of accounts, reporting and forecasting processes, rate and regulatory filings, accounting, taxes, capital markets, credit rating agency protocols, and financial statement analysis.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Word).
• Demonstrate a questioning attitude to learn, produce results and develop relationships.

• Excellent analytical abilities.

Responsibilities

• Maintaining a safe workplace for coworkers and the community based upon knowledge of potential hazards and industry regulations/requirements
• Alignment with FirstEnergy’s Core Values and Behaviors as well as priorities of the Controller and Finance organization
• Assisting and coordinating monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close entries and processes for Energy Delivery by developing or approving financial journal entries and accruals
• Preparation of capitalization and reclassification journal entries such as Rubber Goods, Lineman Essentials, Small Tools, Claims and Make Ready write off entries
• Conducting Non-Consumption SD (Sales Distribution) Reserve process on a monthly basis
• Conduct Storm Resettlement Process between capital and O&M on a monthly basis as well routine updates to variables within the process
• Prepare Blackline reconciliation for related accounts
• Support Mutual Assistance Storm accounting process when applicable
• Facilitating and maintaining SOX Controls and PPE narratives as well as operating controls around in-servicing
• Strategic guidance to regulated operations such as Capital vs O&M determination
• Developing and conducting pre-unitization controls on projects and work orders
• Supports annual audit inquiries and testing
• Procedure development and adherence related to accounting transactions through existing and new system integrations, such as CREWS, CASCADE, OMA, FieldNet, PowerPlan, and SAP
• Support regulatory filings and reporting
• Ensuring effective operation of internal controls through collaboration with General Accounting, Technical Accounting, Property Accounting, and Financial Reporting departments
• Performing financial analysis, evaluations and providing ad-hoc support as necessary
• Extracting and manipulating data using query tools for various databases and systems
• Learning and exercising sound decision making and developing alternatives and recommendations to improve work processes
• Consistently anticipating and delivering against a defined action plan
• Conducting business-specific research, analyzing data, interpreting results and assisting with implementation activities

About The Opportunity

This is an open position within FirstEnergy Service Company, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp.

The reporting location for this onsite position may be based at any FirstEnergy Service location, including but not limited to Akron, OH; Williamsport, MD; Reading, PA; Greensburg, PA; and Erie, PA.

This position is in the Accounting Policy and Controls organization within the Controller’s department. The Controller’s Department is focused on staff development and professional growth in an industry dealing with complex and technical business issues. Accounting Policy and Controls serves as a group providing cost settlement and technical accounting configuration guidance and compliance with such guidance for our regulated companies. Our areas of focus are but not limited to: accounting guidance, policies, system configurations, unitization, and controls for Energy Delivery Operations. Areas of expertise include financial cost flows between systems, construction cost policies and procedures, and compliance of Energy Delivery work management functions.
