The ideal candidate holds a BSN (preferred), has 1–2 years OR circulating experience, and possesses active Michigan RN licensure.

  • Current Michigan RN licensure and ability to communicate with the healthcare team.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preoperative assessments, verify surgical site and patient ID.
  • Prepare and maintain OR environments and equipment per protocols.
  • Serve as circulating nurse, manage positioning, monitor vitals, count supplies.
  • Maintain infection control standards and sterile field integrity.
  • Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia, and staff to ensure workflow.
  • Document perioperative nursing care and patient responses in EHR.
  • Educate patients and families on periop expectations and discharge.
  • Respond to emergencies and support quality improvement initiatives.

Provides leadership in the coordination and delivery of quality compassionate patient care. Utilizes the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide, delegate, supervise, and document care and teaching of patients and families. Effectively communicates pertinent patient and family information to the healthcare team. Participates in identifying and implementing solutions for variances from patient goals.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Performs comprehensive preoperative patient assessments, including vital signs, medical history review, and verification of surgical site marking and patient identification protocols.
  • Prepares and maintains operating room environments, ensuring proper setup of surgical equipment, instruments, and supplies according to established protocols and surgeon preferences.
  • Serves as circulating nurse, managing patient positioning, monitoring vital signs, and maintaining accurate count of sponges, needles, and instruments throughout surgical procedures.
  • Maintains strict adherence to infection control standards, sterile field protocols, and safety regulations to prevent surgical site infections and ensure patient safety.
  • Collaborates effectively with surgeons, anesthesia providers, surgical technologists, and other healthcare team members to ensure seamless surgical workflow and optimal patient outcomes.
  • Documents all perioperative nursing care, medications administered, and patient responses accurately and timely in the electronic health record system.
  • Provides patient and family education regarding preoperative and postoperative expectations, discharge instructions, and follow-up care requirements.
  • Responds promptly to emergency situations and implements appropriate interventions while maintaining composure in high-pressure environments.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives, peer review processes, and continuing education to enhance clinical competency and departmental performance.

HOURS: The unit is open Monday-Friday. Shift is 0630-1500 (occasionally required to stay over to finish cases).

SURGICAL SERVICES: This position supports a very busy 3-room multi-specialty operating room providing a variety of surgical services including Ophthalmology, General Surgery, Plastics, Gynecology, Orthopedic Hand, Orthopedic Foot, Urology, and ENT procedures.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • BSN preferred.
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
  • OR Circulating experience (1-2 years)
  • Clinical knowledge and analytical abilities necessary to formulate effective nursing care plans.
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of professional nursing services.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, families, and hospital personnel.
  • Scrub knowledge is a plus
  • Must have prior operating room experience
  • Must have a positive attitude
  • Requires a team player and be able to work in a fast-paced environment

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:

  • Current licensure by the Michigan State Board of Nursing
