Job description

Primary Function

The ambulatory pharmacy technician provides integrated support to patients and pharmacists by delivering a comprehensive approach to total quality patient care through medication adherence support.

Responsibilities:

  1. Provides excellent customer service;
  2. Interprets and enters prescriptions;
  3. Clarifies prescription orders with pharmacists and/or clinicians as appropriate;
  4. Labels and fills prescriptions for pharmacist verification;
  5. Performs pharmaceutical calculations;
  6. Identifies medications requiring special storage or handling, such as hazardous or refrigerated medications;
  7. Assembles supplies necessary for medications, including sharps containers, needles, syringes, alcohol swabs, and Band-Aids;
  8. Prepares medication for delivery to patients and departments;
  9. Provides medication delivery services within hospitals;
  10. Answers, resolves, and triages inbound inquiries;
  11. Conducts outbound therapy and medication adherence check-ups;
  12. Secures refill prescriptions;
  13. Resolves insurance issues and assists with financial aid;
  14. Maintains pharmacy inventory, including drug ordering and receiving;
  15. Communicates with patients over the phone to address medication concerns;
  16. Inputs data, performs adjudication on test claims, and prepares follow-up plans;
  17. Manages and updates relevant data using database applications;
  18. Applies observations and recommendations to improve operations, productivity, quality, and customer service;
  19. Identifies trends, resolves problems, and recommends improvements;
  20. Participates in process improvement initiatives;
  21. Acts as a value-added partner to stakeholders;
  22. Protects organizational information confidentiality;
  23. Updates job knowledge through education, reading, networking, and professional participation;
  24. Willing to undertake any necessary duties for organizational betterment;
  25. Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications and Specifications

Required Licensure/Certification: Must be registered as a Pharmacy Technician in Rhode Island. Must obtain national certification as a CPhT within 6 months of hire.

Experience: Minimum 1 year required; 5+ years preferred.
