Job description

Welder for Hull Repair and Refurbishment
Roles And Responsibilities

The M2 Bradley Hull Welder and Fabricator performs authorized welding, metal repair, fabrication, and fit-up work in support of M2 Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle hull refurbishment and rebuild activities. The role covers aluminum hull structures and associated steel components, brackets, mounts, panels, and fittings within the approved project scope.

The welder must follow approved drawings, repair instructions, welding procedure specifications (WPS), and quality requirements. Structural hull and armor repairs require approved technical repair instructions and welding qualifications covering the assigned work. The welder must refer repairs outside those approvals or qualifications to the supervisor, quality control, and engineering personnel.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Inspect assigned hull areas and components for cracks, corrosion, deformation, damaged welds, and missing or damaged fittings. Record findings and confirm the authorized repair scope before starting work.
  • Perform aluminum MIG welding (GMAW) and other welding processes only when required by the approved WPS and covered by the welder’s qualifications. Use TIG welding (GTAW) where specified and qualified.
  • Complete authorized steel welding and fabrication on hull-associated components. Perform armor-steel work only under separately approved repair procedures and applicable qualifications.
  • Prepare surfaces, remove coatings and contaminants using approved methods, and perform joint preparation and fit-up in accordance with the repair instructions.
  • Cut, form, fit, and fabricate authorized replacement brackets, mounts, panels, and fittings from approved materials and drawings; do not make unapproved design or material substitutions.
  • Use approved fixtures, clamps, and measuring tools to maintain alignment, dimensions, and component fit during repair and fabrication.
  • Follow the approved WPS for consumables, equipment settings, welding sequence, and thermal controls. Prevent contamination and control distortion in accordance with the applicable procedure.
  • Repair approved cracks, damaged welds, and hull sections within the assigned qualification range and repair authority. Escalate damage for which no approved repair instruction exists.
  • Protect adjacent components and coordinate vehicle preparation, equipment isolation, and hot-work authorization with maintenance and safety personnel.
  • Perform visual workmanship checks and dimensional verification within assigned competence. Present work to QC at required hold points and before repaired areas are concealed or coated.
  • Support required nondestructive testing by qualified inspection personnel; correct documented weld defects only under approved rework instructions and submit repairs for reinspection.
  • Maintain material and consumable identification, qualification records, weld and repair records, and inspection traceability as required by the project quality plan.
  • Operate welding, cutting, grinding, forming, and handling equipment only when trained and authorized. Inspect equipment and maintain accountability for tools.
  • Follow ventilation, fire prevention, confined-space, hazardous-material, environmental, and personal protective equipment requirements; maintain a safe and orderly work area.
Minimum Requirements
  • Minimum of three years of hands-on welding and fabrication experience, including demonstrated structural aluminum welding experience and thick-plate fit-up and repair skills.
  • Formal welding training, apprenticeship, or equivalent demonstrated military or civilian experience. U.S. Army MOS 91E or legacy MOS 44B experience may satisfy the training background when supported by relevant skills and qualifications.
  • Documented welder performance qualifications accepted by the customer for the assigned work, or ability to obtain them before production welding. Qualifications must cover the applicable process, material, thickness, joint type, and welding positions.
  • Ability to work to the applicable customer welding requirements, including MIL-STD-3057 for armor-grade aluminum where invoked by the contract or technical data. A general welding certificate alone does not establish qualification for every hull repair.
  • Proficiency in aluminum MIG welding (GMAW), steel fabrication, joint preparation, fit-up, and distortion control. Additional process qualifications are required when specified by the assigned WPS.
  • Ability to read fabrication drawings, weld symbols, dimensions, tolerances, WPS documents, and approved repair instructions.
  • Ability to identify materials and welding consumables, maintain required traceability, and avoid unapproved substitutions.
  • Ability to recognize visible weld defects, coordinate with QC, and complete repair and fabrication records accurately.
  • Ability to meet customer and site access requirements, pass required background checks, and complete customer-required medical screening.
Physical and Working Conditions
  • Ability to perform essential duties, with reasonable accommodation where applicable, including climbing onto and into tracked vehicles, bending, kneeling, and working in restricted areas under required entry controls.
  • Ability to handle tools and materials and loads of up to 25 pounds frequently and 50 pounds intermittently, using lifting assistance and mechanical handling equipment as required.
  • Ability to work in workshop and field environments involving heat, sparks, welding fumes, dust, noise, and varying temperatures while using required protective equipment and ventilation.
  • Ability to work the assigned contract schedule, including shifts, overtime, or surge support as required and permitted by applicable law.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous M2 Bradley aluminum hull welding, repair, refurbishment, or rebuild experience, especially on the variant assigned to the project.
  • Experience repairing comparable aluminum-hulled armored vehicles under approved military or manufacturer repair procedures.
  • Experience with armor-grade aluminum and separately qualified armor-steel welding where included in the project scope.
  • Aluminum TIG welding (GTAW) and pulsed MIG welding experience when required by approved procedures.
  • Experience working with QC inspectors, welding engineers, nondestructive testing personnel, and documented corrective-action processes.
  • Experience using computerized maintenance or production systems to record work, materials, and inspection status.
