Job summary

Community Action Partnerships of Western Nebraska (CAPWN) is seeking a Head Start/CAPWN CDC Cook to prepare and serve meals for children and staff in our Western Nebraska centers. The role follows CACFP and Head Start standards, with a focus on safe, nutritious food preparation and kitchen safety.

You will plan menus, shop locally, supervise volunteers, and collaborate with the Head Start Nutrition Manager to provide high‑quality meals and nutrition education in a supportive learning environment

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years of age.
• High school equivalency (GED).
• Experience in food sanitation, food safety and serving nutritious foods.
• Basic computer skills using Microsoft Office.
• Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid CPR AED card or ability to acquire within three months.
• Have a valid driver’s license with a good driving record.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and serve attractive and nutritious meals for children and staff in accordance with CACFP/Head Start standards.
• Shop locally and order through distributors, purchasing foods in an economical manner.
• Maintain a clean, organized kitchen and uphold health and safety standards.
• Maintain kitchen equipment; report damaged or lost items.
• Complete required paperwork.
• Join the children and staff for noon meals to model appropriate eating behaviors.
• Be a resource to teachers for nutrition education and menu planning.
• Involve parents in understanding nutrition and food preparation.
• Supervise volunteers in the kitchen.
• Communicate positively and professionally.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding program, children, families and staff.
• Participate in team meetings, training and program assessment.
• Model CAPWN standards of behavior and service quality.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Community Action Partnerships of Western Nebraska (CAPWN) is a non-profit community-based health and human services organization that serves low-income, disadvantaged and those unable to meet their needs through other sources. The agency was established in 1965 and provides services to over 9,000 individuals, children and families in three main areas:

• Community Health Services: WIC, Commodity Supplemental Food, Foster Grandparents, Head Start, and Child Development Center.

Areas of Responsibility

Purchase and prepare meals for children and staff in accordance with Administration for Children and Families (ACF) Head Start Performance Standards and Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). Maintain kitchen following the proper health and sanitation guidelines.

Major Duties

• Prepare and serve attractive and tasteful foods adapted to the varied physical development of the children in the center that meets requirements for creditable meals.
• Shop locally and order through distributors, purchasing foods in an economical manner.
• Keep an organized and hygienic kitchen and surrounding area in order to uphold required health and safety standards.
• Maintain food service equipment in working condition, report damaged and loss of kitchen equipment and food to Nutrition Coordinator.
• Maintain completed and accurate required paperwork.
• Join the children and staff for noon meals to model appropriate eating behaviors.
• Be a resource to teachers for ways children can be involved in food preparation and experiences, plan menus.
• Involve parents in better understanding of nutrition and increase abilities in food preparation and serving, along with providing consumer information.
• Supervises volunteers working in the kitchen.
• Communicate in a positive and proficient manner.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding program, children, families and staff.
• Participate and cooperate to support a quality program through participation in team meetings, training and program assessment.

Working Conditions

• May work some evenings and weekends for meetings or trainings

Physical Requirements

• Must complete health physical upon entry to program and yearly physical.
• Must complete TB titer and DTAP vaccination or show proof of completion.
• Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
• Must be able to operate and maintain kitchen equipment.
• Physically able to carry and lift food totes and groceries.
• Physically able to sit down at child’s level at table.

Minimum Qualifications

Grade 2

• Must be 18 years of age.
• High school equivalency (GED).
• Experience in food sanitation, food safety and serving nutritious foods.
• Basic computer skills using Microsoft office.

Grade 3

• Two years’ experience.
